Progress on Phase 1C (a) Construction

Progress on Phase 1C (a), which runs along Louis Botha Avenue towards Sandton, is well underway. Most of the construction work has been completed. In addition, all 13 new low-floor bus stations are nearing readiness. Significant infrastructure developments, such as three bridges, are also complete. These include the Rea Vaya bus and pedestrian bridge on Lees Street in Marlboro. There is also a dedicated cycling and walking bridge near Grayston Drive. Additionally, the Heritage Bridge in Berea, close to the old Herbert Baker bus station, is all set to support the new bus routes.

Free Passenger Cards Distribution Ahead of Launch

Ahead of the official launch expected before the year ends, Rea Vaya has started distributing free new BRT passenger cards at the Bellevue station near the Johannesburg CBD. These cards, which normally cost R50, are available on a first-come, first-served basis. To receive a free card, commuters must have a cellphone capable of receiving an OTP for registration. The card distribution will continue at Bellevue station through October.

Wide Reach of the New Routes

The new routes will not only serve Alexandra and Sandton but also improve connectivity to other important neighbourhoods and suburbs. According to the Rea Vaya website, the expanded Phase 1C (a) will link areas such as Johannesburg CBD, Hillbrow, Bellevue, Yeoville, and Orange Grove. It will also connect to Cheltondale, Highlands North, Balfour Park, Gresswold, Bramley, Wynberg, Marlboro, Athol, Sandown, Longmeadow, and Greenstone. This will provide safe and reliable transport options to many more commuters.
