The maintenance operation will last for three full days, from the fifteenth to the eighteenth of July, and will involve significant pipeline repairs that affect the Palmiet System, including the Alexander Park Reservoir and South Hills Tower.

Impact on Water Supply and Pumping Capacity
During the maintenance period, Rand Water will reduce pumping capacity across the affected systems. This necessary reduction aims to allow for essential repairs but will impact the flow of water to various areas.
As a result, residents and businesses serviced by the Alexander Park Reservoir and South Hills Tower may experience low water pressure and possible outages. It is important for them to prepare for intermittent supply by storing enough water ahead of time.
Areas Affected by Alexander Park Reservoir Maintenance
The maintenance will affect many neighborhoods connected to the Alexander Park Reservoir. These include South Kensington, Kensington Extensions four, seven, ten, twelve, and thirteen, Malvern one, Bezuidenhout Valley, Bruma, Elcedes, Cleveden, De Wetshof, George Goch, Oospoort, The Gabels, and Wychwood. Additional suburbs such as Benrose Extensions eight and twelve, Cleverland, Denver, Heriotdale Extension twelve, and Jeppestown will also experience water supply interruptions.
Areas Served by South Hills Tower Also Impacted
The South Hills Tower supplies water to southern parts of Johannesburg and will experience reduced pumping capacity during the maintenance window. Areas dependent on this infrastructure include Risana, South Hills, Tulisa Park, Linmeyer, Steeledale, The Hills, Oakdene, Rosettenville, and Klipriviersberg Estate South Hills. Residents in these neighborhoods should expect similar disruptions and plan accordingly.
Preparing for the Maintenance Period
Rand Water advises all residents in the affected areas to prepare for potential water shortages by storing sufficient water before the maintenance begins. Limiting water use during this period and reporting any leaks promptly will help conserve the available supply. Authorities may also deploy water tankers in some locations to support communities during the maintenance.
Ensuring a Reliable Water Future
While the maintenance will cause short-term disruptions, it plays a vital role in maintaining and improving the reliability of Johannesburg’s water supply. Addressing aging infrastructure now helps prevent unexpected breakdowns that could lead to more severe water shortages in the future.
These upgrades will also improve water quality by ensuring that treatment and distribution systems operate efficiently. Additionally, increasing the system’s capacity will enable Rand Water to meet the growing demand from Johannesburg’s expanding population and industries.
Rand Water’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure maintenance demonstrates its dedication to providing a resilient and sustainable water network. This long-term investment benefits the city by supporting reliable access to clean water for residents and businesses alike.
