Orlando Pirates Shut Down R31.2 million Relebohile Mofokeng Transfer Talk

Orlando Pirates have poured cold water on reports suggesting Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv is pursuing the signature of Relebohile Mofokeng. Despite fresh speculation out of Israel, the Soweto giants insist they’ve received no formal approach for the 20-year-old winger.

Orlando Pirates Dismisses Reports of Israeli Interest

Claims that Maccabi had tabled interest surfaced earlier this week, prompting suggestions that Pirates had placed a €1.5 million (approximately R31.2 million) valuation on Mofokeng, along with a sell-on clause for future transfers. However, sources close to the club have rubbished those claims, labelling the talk as unfounded and disruptive.

Disruption Not Welcomed During Key Period

According to reports, a trusted insider at Pirates categorically denied that any discussions or offers had taken place. The source further criticised the timing of the speculation, saying it was creating unnecessary distraction during a critical phase of the pre-season.

The Buccaneers‘ silence appears to align with a policy of not engaging transfer talk unless progress has been made.

Mofokeng’s Rising Stock and European Interest

Mofokeng has become a breakout star at Orlando Pirates since being promoted to the senior squad by coach Jose Riveiro two seasons ago. His dazzling footwork, maturity on the ball, and versatility in attack have earned him plaudits from fans and pundits alike.

His rise hasn’t gone unnoticed on the international stage either. Last year, whispers of interest from European powerhouse FC Barcelona made headlines, though no concrete offer ever materialised. That brief flirtation with European scouts only added to the young talent’s growing profile.

A Move Abroad Still on the Cards?

Should Mofokeng eventually move to Israel, he would be joining a small but notable group of South Africans who have taken their talents to the Middle East. Notable names to have previously featured in the Israeli Premier League include Tsepo Masilela, Siyabonga Nkosi, Bevan Fransman, and Dino Ndlovu.

Currently, former Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana defender Rushine De Reuck is plying his trade in the region, adding to the possibility that Mofokeng could thrive in that environment. However, Orlando Pirates are not entertaining any such scenarios at this stage.

Tensions Around Israeli Football Move

A potential transfer to Israel may stir political unease given the country’s controversial standing with the South African government. In 2023, South Africa lodged a case with the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza. The South African public sentiment remains strongly pro-Palestinian, with many opposing any form of ties with Israel amid ongoing conflict.

This backdrop could further complicate any move by a high-profile South African footballer like Mofokeng to an Israeli club. The fallout may affect both his career and public image, making Pirates’ firm stance even more understandable.

Young Star Going Nowhere – For Now

For now, the Buccaneers appear committed to retaining their rising star, with no signs of relenting despite mounting speculation. Whether or not interest from abroad solidifies into a real offer remains to be seen. But for the moment, Mofokeng remains a crucial piece of the puzzle for a Pirates side hoping to challenge on all fronts this coming season.
