Orlando Pirates Legend Step Up as Assistant Coach

Orlando Pirates have taken a significant step in strengthening their technical bench. They have promoted a familiar face—club legend Joseph “Duku Duku” Makhanya—into the senior team setup for the upcoming 2025/26 season.
The former winger is beloved by fans for his flair and loyalty during his playing days. He has been part of the Buccaneers’ coaching structure for several years. Most recently, he served as head coach of the club’s DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) team, a position he held with distinction.
A Well-Earned Promotion
After consistently guiding the youth team with professionalism and success, the club has rewarded Makhanya by promoting him to the senior technical team. In his new position, the Kagiso-born tactician will serve as the second assistant coach to newly appointed head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. He will work alongside Mandla Ncikazi, who retains his role as first assistant.
Makhanya’s coaching credentials continue to grow. He currently holds a CAF B License and is actively working toward completing his CAF A License. This move reflects both his ambition and the club’s confidence in his long-term potential.
Already in Action
The Pirates’ pre-season preparations are well underway, and Makhanya has wasted no time getting started. He joined the squad on their trip to Spain earlier this week. He will resume his responsibilities as part of the new-look technical team.
With Makhanya stepping up, Orlando Pirates have also moved swiftly to fill the void in the DDC team. Roscoe Krieling, who previously led the youth structures at SuperSport United, was appointed as the new head coach of the Diski Challenge team. His arrival is to ensure continuity and development within the club’s thriving youth system.
Duku Duku’s Rise Marks a New Era for Pirates
Joseph Makhanya’s promotion is more than just a personnel shift; it symbolises Orlando Pirates’ commitment to nurturing talent both on and off the pitch. A homegrown legend returns to the top, this time wearing a coach’s whistle. He is ready to help steer the Buccaneers to greater heights.
