Important Road Upgrades Ahead

The N1 highway is a critical route connecting Gauteng to Limpopo and the Botswana border. Bakwena N1N4, the concessionaire responsible for this corridor, has awarded contracts for two extensive rehabilitation projects. The N1 Roadworks will include pavement reconstruction, crack sealing, and new overlaying to extend the road’s lifespan.

First Project: Proefplaas Interchange to Pumulani Main Line Plaza

The first contract covers the section of the N1 between Proefplaas Interchange and Pumulani Main Line Plaza under the N1 Roadworks. The project started with mobilisation in early August 2025. Major construction begins on 1 October 2025 and is expected to finish by November 2026.

This R276 million contract is awarded to Roadmac Surfacing. Work will involve removing damaged pavement layers, repairing cracks, and overlaying the carriageway. Construction will happen during both day and night to speed up progress.

Traffic Management During the First Project

During peak traffic times, all lanes will remain open to ease congestion. Peak hours are 5:30 am to 9:30 am southbound in the mornings and 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm northbound in the afternoons.

Outside these hours, lane closures will occur with one lane closed in each direction as part of the N1 Roadworks. Drivers are urged to stay alert and drive cautiously around construction zones.

Second Project: Larger Section and Longer Duration

The second rehabilitation project is larger and expected to cause more significant disruptions. The project is scheduled to begin with a site establishment phase from September to December 2025, with active construction from January 2026 to June 2027.

The R324 million contract, also awarded to Roadmac Surfacing, involves full-depth reconstruction of pavement layers, crack sealing, and overlaying.

Traffic Impact During the Second Project

Due to the nature of the work, traffic capacity will be reduced with lane closures spanning approximately 5 kilometers in each direction. Stop/go traffic systems will control the traffic flow in these sections.

Motorists should anticipate longer delays and plan their travel times accordingly. Alternative routes are advisable where possible.

Temporary Lane Closures Near Rigel Off-Ramp

In August 2025, SANRAL implemented temporary lane closures near the Rigel off-ramp in Pretoria. This was part of the ongoing N1 Roadworks to replace an overhead gantry sign as part of a project to improve road safety with better visible signage.

The closure lasted from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on 10 August 2025. During this time, traffic was diverted to the emergency slow lane, with clearly marked alternative routes available.

Why These Upgrades Matter

The N1 serves as a lifeline route for freight, commuters, and holiday traffic. It supports trade routes to key border posts including Beitbridge and Skilpadshek.

Improving the pavement condition and safety features will reduce accidents and travel risks. Once complete, the N1 Roadworks projects are expected to significantly enhance travel comfort and efficiency.

Mixed Reactions from Road Users

Many commuters welcomed the long-awaited road improvements. They have expressed relief that potholes and uneven surfaces will be addressed.

On social media, some users raised concerns about the timing of construction, especially with the busy festive season approaching. Trucking companies noted potential delivery delays and urged careful planning.

Bakwena’s Message to Motorists

Bakwena COO Solly Kganyago thanked the public for their cooperation and patience. He highlighted the importance of the N1 Roadworks for long-term safety and travel efficiency.

“We thank our communities and motorists for their patience and cooperation as we undertake these vital improvements to ensure safer and more efficient travel,” Kganyago said.
