Key Responsibilities
As a Medical Specialist in Radiation Oncology, the successful candidate will be expected to:
- Provide Radiation Oncology Services: You will render the full spectrum of radiation oncology services, including conducting clinical assessments, formulating treatment plans, and delivering radiation therapy treatments.
- Multi-Disciplinary Collaboration: Attending multi-disciplinary meetings is an essential part of the role, ensuring that all aspects of patient care are considered in treatment planning.
- Manage Patient Backlogs: You will assist with reducing patient backlogs in treatments, ensuring the safe and effective delivery of radiation therapy that is both evidence-based and ethical, while considering health economics.
- Department Support: Assist the Head of Department with day-to-day management and oversee the work of Registrars to ensure adequate service delivery.
- Teaching and Supervision: The role involves contributing to the department’s teaching program, including formal and informal training sessions for Registrars and participation in academic meetings. The successful candidate will also supervise Registrars working on their MMeds.
- Clinical Research: You will be involved in clinical research in radiation oncology, contributing to the academic and scientific growth of the department.
- Emergency Response: Be prepared to work extended hours, especially when handling radiation oncology emergencies, and assist with the urgent assessment and treatment of patients.
Job Requirements
To be eligible for this role, applicants must meet the following qualifications and requirements:
- HPCSA Registration: The candidate must have an appropriate qualification allowing registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Radiation Oncology.
- No Experience Requirement: Importantly, no prior experience is required after registration with the HPCSA.
- Teaching and Mentoring: Experience in teaching or mentoring Registrars would be advantageous, as the role involves significant educational responsibilities.
- Commitment to Clinical Care: The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to providing high-quality, evidence-based, and patient-centered care.
