Hugo Broos Labels Mbekezeli Mbokazi Bafana Bafana’s Next Big Star

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has singled out Orlando Pirates’ young defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi as a player destined for greatness, praising his maturity, composure, and leadership at just 19 years old.

Mbokazi initially joined Pirates as a temporary solution to cover injuries in the central defence last season. However, he quickly seized the opportunity, becoming a key figure in the squad and earning the captain’s armband this season. His performances have drawn widespread acclaim, culminating in his inclusion in Broos’ squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria in Bloemfontein next week.

Senior Call-Up and Mixed Emotions

Broos acknowledged the mixed emotions surrounding Mbokazi’s call-up. The teenager will miss the South Africa U20 camp ahead of their World Cup campaign in Chile later this month. While playing at a global youth tournament is a rare opportunity, Broos who himself played in a World Cup at 17 believes the defender’s senior national team experience is invaluable.

“Mbokazi plays like he’s been in the top flight for five years,” Broos said following the squad announcement. “He’s confident, strong, and a very good defender, even against top-quality players. Against Sundowns, he marked Iqraam Rayners perfectly he pushed him aside with strength and composure. For a 19-year-old, that’s something very special.”

Orlando Pirates’ Reluctance and National Team Opportunities

The Belgian coach also noted that Pirates may be reluctant to release Mbokazi, given his importance to their domestic and continental ambitions. If he misses the U20 World Cup, he would remain available for South Africa’s final qualifiers in October. This prospect excites Broos, who has already developed a strong affinity for the teenager.

With the World Cup in North America next year on the horizon, Broos wants his squad to give everything in pursuit of qualification.

“There’s no better motivation than knowing you could go to the World Cup,” he said. “For some players, this could be their first and last opportunity. Qualifying in Africa is tough you have to fight for every game. Friday’s match against Lesotho won’t be easy just because of rankings. Every game is difficult.”

Bafana Bafana vs Nigeria: The Real Test

While Lesotho will provide a stern test, the real challenge lies against Nigeria, South Africa’s historical rival. Even though the Super Eagles are struggling in Group C, Broos is confident.

“They don’t like playing against us because they know we’ve become a better team. There’s no reason to be afraid of Nigeria.”

Mbokazi: A Teenage Star for Bafana

With Mbokazi expected to start in both qualifiers, Broos is banking on his teenage star to shine on the big stage, further cementing his reputation as one of South Africa’s most promising young talents and helping Bafana Bafana edge closer to the World Cup.
