Mamelodi Sundowns Seal Eighth Straight League Title with 3-0 Win Over Chippa

Mamelodi Sundowns have once again stamped their dominance on local football. They sealed their eighth straight Betway Premiership title with a 3-0 victory over Chippa United at the Buffalo City Municipality Stadium in East London on Wednesday evening. This result extended Sundowns’ incredible unbeaten league record against Chippa. It also secured their 18th domestic league crown in club history.

This win also marked a second consecutive 3-0 triumph over the Chilli Boys in less than a week. It underlined their class and consistency throughout the season.

Ruthless Mamelodi Sundowns Outclass Struggling Chippa

From the onset, Masandawana were in control, nearly breaking the deadlock early after forcing a turnover in Chippa’s half. Although Iqraam Rayners failed to convert the initial chance, he made no mistake in the 11th minute. After a clever pass from Lucas Ribeiro Costa, Rayners cut onto his right foot and lashed the ball into the top corner. He scored his 14th goal of the season, drawing level with Costa in the scoring charts.

Chippa goalkeeper Darren Johnson was kept busy. He made a string of important saves to keep the deficit from growing in the first half. He denied Ribeiro Costa in the 21st minute and again did well to stop Rayners from reaching a through ball by Jayden Adams.

Despite Sundowns’ constant pressure, they went into the break with just a one-goal lead. Their dominance resumed in the second half. Although Rayners thought he’d scored again in the 57th minute, the flag went up for a questionable offside decision.

Eventually, Arthur Sales doubled the advantage in the 69th minute with a looping cross that unexpectedly dipped into the net. The Brazilian wasn’t done yet. He capitalised on a poor clearance from Johnson in the 89th minute, calmly finishing into the bottom corner to seal the deal.

Coach Cardoso’s Pride in a Historic Achievement

Speaking after the match, Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso reflected on what he called a beautiful, though challenging, journey.

“We believed in the process, and the players showed great character,” he said. He also hinted at the pressure of leading a team undergoing tactical evolution while still chasing history.

Cardoso’s remarks also subtly acknowledged the recent spotlight on the Soweto Derby and the Nedbank Cup final. He suggested his side’s quiet consistency deserved greater recognition.

Chippa’s Top-Eight Hopes Hang in the Balance

Despite the defeat, Chippa United remain mathematically in contention for a top-eight finish. However, their six-game losing streak has left them precariously positioned. They are clinging to their spot on goal difference, with matches against the likes of Kaizer Chiefs and Marumo Gallants still influencing the final standings.

What’s Next?

Mamelodi Sundowns, now on 70 points, are mathematically out of reach for Orlando Pirates. The latter can only gather a maximum of 67 points even if they win their remaining fixtures. The Brazilians will be officially crowned champions after their final match against Magesi FC at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday.

Chippa, meanwhile, travel to Dr. Petrus Molemela Stadium to take on fellow top-eight hopefuls Marumo Gallants. This promises to be a dramatic closing chapter to their campaign.

With this latest title, Mamelodi Sundowns have once again proven they are the gold standard in South African football. They are relentless, consistent, and seemingly untouchable.
