Mamelodi Sundowns Face Growing Concerns After MTN8 Exit

Mamelodi Sundowns’ hopes of lifting the MTN8 trophy were dashed once more, following their penalty shootout defeat to Orlando Pirates at Lucas Moripe Stadium. The result means the Brazilians remain without success in the competition despite dominating the Betway Premiership in recent years.

Fans were left frustrated, voicing displeasure towards sporting director Flemming Berg and coach Miguel Cardoso. A small group of supporters confronted the team bus after the game, signalling that patience is starting to wear thin.

Knockout Struggles Continue

While Sundowns have turned league dominance into routine, their knockout record continues to disappoint. After falling short in two cup finals last season, they entered this year’s MTN8 with high expectations. Instead, they let a good position slip against Pirates and bowed out before reaching the final.

With more cup competitions on the horizon, pressure is mounting for the team to deliver silverware beyond the Premiership title.

Transfer Concerns

Unlike previous seasons when Sundowns made bold moves in the transfer market, their business has been limited. The only major arrival has been Fawaaz Basadien from Stellenbosch FC. Young talents Gomolemo Kekana and Thato Sibiya have been promoted from the Diski Challenge squad, but depth remains a concern.

Given that many Sundowns players are likely to represent Bafana Bafana at the Africa Cup of Nations, squad reinforcements will be crucial to navigate a long campaign.

Player Uncertainty

The absence of right-back Khuliso Mudau has been noticeable, with contract issues still unresolved. Zuko Mdunyelwa has stepped up, but Sundowns lack stability in that position.

Meanwhile, speculation continues around key players:

  • Lucas Ribeiro Costa is pushing for a move away.
  • Peter Shalulile, Kutlwano Letlhaku, and Thapelo Maseko have been linked with exits.

Such uncertainty could disrupt focus during a crucial part of the season.

Stars Out of Form

Coach Cardoso has pointed out that Sundowns’ delayed pre-season, due to their FIFA Club World Cup involvement, has affected rhythm. The team is yet to lose in regulation time, but performances have lacked their usual fluency.

Key players like Teboho Mokoena, Ronwen Williams, Marcelo Allende and Grant Kekana are still searching for top form. Until they return to their best, Sundowns may struggle to live up to their high standards.
