LIV Golf Comes to South Africa: How Steyn City Will Redefine Pro Golf in the Country

For the first time in decades, South African golf fans will witness a star-studded international lineup on home turf. This occurs when the LIV Golf League makes its African debut next year. From 20 to 22 March 2026, Steyn City in Johannesburg will host the highly anticipated tournament. This move promises to shake up the local golfing scene and rekindle the excitement of global golf events in the country.

A Historic First for Africa

The tournament at Steyn City will mark LIV Golf’s first appearance on the African continent. While South Africa has produced golfing greats and hosted iconic events in the past, including the famed Million Dollar Challenge at Sun City and the 2003 Presidents Cup at Fancourt, it has been years since international stars graced local fairways on this scale.

This landmark occasion will offer South Africans the rare chance to watch numerous major champions live, including:

  • Jon Rahm
  • Brooks Koepka
  • Bryson DeChambeau
  • Dustin Johnson
  • Sergio Garcia
  • Cameron Smith
  • Phil Mickelson
  • Henrik Stenson
  • Bubba Watson
  • Patrick Reed
  • Martin Kaymer
  • Tyrrell Hatton
  • Lee Westwood
  • Joaquin Niemann

Local Legends Front and Centre

South Africa’s own stars will be out in full force, headlined by Louis Oosthuizen, the 2010 Open Championship winner and captain of the all-South African Stinger GC team. He’ll be joined by compatriots Charl Schwartzel, Branden Grace, and Dean Burmester. Together they form a formidable local contingent expected to energize the crowd.

Oosthuizen expressed his pride and excitement at the prospect of playing such a high-profile event at home.

“It’s always special to compete at home, and I’m incredibly proud to bring LIV Golf to South Africa for the first time. For Branden, Charl, Dean and I to play in front of our fans, friends, and families will be an unforgettable experience,” he said at the official announcement in London.

Steyn City Gears Up for Global Spotlight

Known for its world-class lifestyle estate and pristine golf course, Steyn City is preparing to welcome the golfing elite and thousands of fans. CEO Steven Louw hinted at some course adjustments, such as thicker rough and narrower fairways. These changes will offer a slight challenge, though he assured that the emphasis will remain on aggressive, entertaining play.

“Everyone still wants to see guys having a go and making birdies,” Louw noted.

The three-day, 54-hole format a trademark of LIV Golf ensures a fast-paced, action-packed experience for both players and spectators.

A New Era for South African Golf

The upcoming event is poised to rejuvenate interest in professional golf across the country. It will inspire a new generation of fans and players. With tickets and fan packages already available through the LIV Golf website, anticipation is building for what promises to be one of the most significant golf events in South Africa’s modern sporting history.

As the countdown to March 2026 begins, LIV Golf’s arrival at Steyn City signals not just a tournament. It is a turning point, one that could transform how South African fans experience the sport for years to come.
