Kaizer Chiefs Secure Kwinika for Another Season

Kaizer Chiefs have officially confirmed that experienced centre back Zitha Kwinika has signed a new one-year deal, putting an end to months of uncertainty about his future at the club.

The 31-year-old defender’s contract was initially due to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season, and earlier signs pointed to an exit, especially with Kwinika seemingly falling out of favour. At one stage, the former Stellenbosch FC captain appeared to be surplus to requirements at Naturena.

Injuries and Suspensions Open the Door

However, a series of unexpected developments turned his situation around. Injuries to Rushwin Dortley and frequent suspensions for Miguel Inacio forced newly appointed head coach Nasreddine Nabi to rely on Kwinika during a critical stage of the campaign.

Kwinika stepped up with maturity and composure, delivering commanding performances in the closing weeks of the season. He featured in four of Amakhosi’s final five Betway Premiership fixtures and played a crucial role in the Nedbank Cup final triumph over arch-rivals Orlando Pirates, helping the team end a ten-year trophy drought.

Despite Departures, Kwinika Stays

Despite the departure of Edmilson Dove, who logged more minutes than Kwinika during the season, doubts remained about whether Chiefs would retain their homegrown product. But those doubts have now been put to rest.

Reports from the public broadcaster confirm that Kwinika, who was part of the team’s pre-season tour to the Netherlands, has secured a new one-year contract with the Soweto giants.

Chance to Cement His Place

The contract renewal offers Kwinika an opportunity to further stake his claim for a place in the heart of Chiefs’ defence. While the club has reinforced its squad, particularly in the fullback positions, central defence remains an area where competition is wide open.

As Chiefs prepare for a new chapter under Nabi’s leadership, Kwinika’s experience, versatility, and leadership could prove vital in shaping a solid defensive unit in the coming season.
