Kaizer Chiefs Cut Ties with Bongani Sam After Injury Woes

Kaizer Chiefs have officially confirmed the departure of defender Bongani Sam. This marks a premature end to what was meant to be a fresh chapter in his career. The news was made public on Thursday, just a day after Sam celebrated his 28th birthday, via the club’s WhatsApp channel.
Short Stay Ends in Quiet Exit
Sam’s stint with Amakhosi lasted just over a year. He joined from Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates in July 2024. The former Bucs man’s time at Naturena, however, never really got off the ground. An unfortunate injury during pre-season ruled him out of competitive action. Consequently, he never made an official appearance for the club.
In a brief statement accompanied by a photo of the player, Chiefs expressed gratitude and well wishes:
“After just one season, Kaizer Chiefs have amicably agreed to part ways with defender Bongani Sam. The Gqeberha-born player joined the club in July 2024. Wishing Bongani all the best. #Amakhosi4Life.”
From Soweto Switch to Silent Goodbye
Making the move between two of the country’s fiercest rivals is never simple. Sam’s switch from Pirates to Chiefs was a bold one. Unfortunately, it ended without impact due to the timing and severity of his injury. Despite having two more years remaining on his contract, the club decided to cut ties early.
The decision signals a continuation of sweeping changes at Chiefs. They are attempting to rebuild following another underwhelming season. The Glamour Boys finished outside the top eight for a second successive campaign, something they’re eager to rectify under newly appointed head coach Nasreddine Nabi.
Kaizer Chiefs Clear Out Continues
Sam’s release follows closely on the heels of another departure. Earlier this week, the club also parted ways with midfielder Tebogo Potsane. The 31-year-old had spent two seasons at Naturena after arriving in July 2023. Chiefs described the exit as mutual, thanking Potsane for his service and wishing him success as we advance.
These moves form part of a broader reshuffle. Amakhosi look to reset their squad ahead of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership. With new coaching philosophies and expectations, several players are being evaluated. In some cases, they are being shown the exit, as the club plots a more competitive season.
Hope for a Revival at Naturena
While the end of Sam’s time at Chiefs may seem abrupt, it’s a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in football. The defender will now look to revive his career elsewhere. Hopefully, he will do so with a clean bill of health and renewed focus.
For Kaizer Chiefs, the mission remains the same: to return to the summit of South African football. With fresh signings expected, and internal changes already underway, supporters will be hoping these tough calls signal a return to winning ways.
