Health Setback Sidelines Springbok Star Ahead of Women’s Rugby World Cup

Springbok Women’s flanker and Bulls Daisies captain Lusanda Dumke will not feature in this year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup in England. This is due to a health setback. The 28-year-old will step away from the game to prioritise her recovery, South African Rugby confirmed on Thursday.
While the nature of her medical condition remains undisclosed at her request, Dumke has asked for privacy during this challenging period. Her withdrawal is a significant loss for both the Springbok women’s team and her club side, the Bulls Daisies.
Dumke’s Impact Felt On and Off the Field
Having earned 33 Test caps and led the Springbok women on three occasions, Dumke’s presence in the national team has been monumental. She most recently captained the Bulls Daisies to a third successive Women’s Premier Division title earlier this year. This achievement cemented her legacy as one of the standout figures in local women’s rugby.
Dumke was previously named the SA Rugby Women’s Player of the Year, a testament to her consistent excellence and leadership. Her influence extended well beyond her on-field performances. Many cited her as a cultural and emotional cornerstone for her teams.
Coaches and Administrators Offer Full Support
Springbok women’s performance coach Swys de Bruin paid tribute to Dumke’s contribution and supported her decision to take time off.
“Lusanda has been pivotal for us,” he said. “Her absence will undoubtedly be felt. But it also serves as a reminder to the players heading to the World Cup that playing for your country while healthy is a true privilege.”
Similarly, Thando Manana, executive for women’s rugby and strategic projects at the Blue Bulls Company, expressed admiration for Dumke’s leadership within the Bulls Daisies setup.
“She’s been more than a captain – she’s the heartbeat of this team,” Manana said. “Her humility and relentless drive have shaped the culture of the Daisies. While we respect her decision to step back, her legacy will continue to inspire those who wear the jersey after her.”
Springbok Women Face Testing World Cup Schedule
The Springbok women’s team will now head into the World Cup without one of their most experienced and inspirational figures. Their campaign kicks off on 24 August with a must-win clash against Brazil. After that, they will face tougher opposition in the form of seventh-ranked Italy and world number four France in the group stages.
The coaching staff will be hoping other leaders step up in Dumke’s absence as they prepare for one of the most competitive tournaments in recent memory. Her leadership void may create opportunities for younger talent to rise. However, the emotional and tactical gap she leaves behind is undeniable.
A Legacy That Lives On
As Dumke steps away from the game, the outpouring of support from the rugby community reflects her profound impact. Her journey has inspired countless young women across the country. While her boots may be off the field for now, her spirit remains firmly embedded in South African rugby.
Supporters and teammates alike are united in wishing Dumke strength and healing during her recovery. One thing is certain: her legacy will echo through the halls of women’s rugby in the country for years to come.
