How the Discount Works

The KlevaMova product applies a 50% reduction on Gautrain train fares only. It is available in various formats, including weekly, monthly, and return trip tickets. However, the discount excludes trips to OR Tambo International Airport. Passengers must apply by submitting relevant documentation for verification and approval.

To encourage uptake, Gautrain offered a free travel weekend on 24 and 25 May 2025 for pre-registered eligible passengers. During this event, customers could bring up to three guests and experience Gautrain services at no cost. Hence, it introduced them to the benefits of the Gautrain discount. Promoters at stations assisted with registration for the discount product, making it easy for qualifying individuals to sign up.

Why This Initiative Matters

Transport costs weigh heavily on many Gauteng households. According to the Gauteng Household Travel Survey, nearly 60% of households spend more than 10% of their income on public transport. The KlevaMova product addresses this challenge by significantly reducing daily commuting expenses. Consequently, it benefits passengers with the Gautrain discount.

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, highlighted the importance of affordable transport: “Affordable public transport is not a luxury, but a fundamental service that provides residents access to jobs and social activities, boosting economic activity.” She added that the initiative is part of a broader government effort. It aims to make Gauteng more connected and inclusive.

Additional Benefits: Reduced Parking Fees

Alongside the fare discount, Gautrain has slashed parking fees at its stations to just R1 per day from 1 April to 31 July 2025. This reduction complements the KlevaMova product by lowering the overall cost of using Gautrain services. Thus, it makes it more accessible to commuters who drive to stations, offering an added advantage of the Gautrain discount.
