Gauteng Police Arrest Fake Cops in Hijacking Operation

In a major victory against organised crime, Gauteng police arrested five suspects who had just hijacked a truck carrying solar batteries worth an estimated R5 million. The suspects, aged between 50 and 69, were caught wearing Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) uniforms and South African Police Service (SAPS) reflector jackets—posing as law enforcement officers to carry out their brazen crime.

Hijacking Unfolds on Modderfontein Road, Sebenza

The incident took place on Wednesday along the R25 Modderfontein Road in Sebenza, Ekurhuleni. According to Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the suspects hijacked the truck and kidnapped the driver before being intercepted by police forces. The truck was carrying valuable solar batteries, making it a lucrative target for criminals.

The truck driver was rescued unharmed during the operation, and the stolen vehicle was successfully recovered.

Criminals in Uniform: A Dangerous Trend

Two of the suspects wore full EMPD uniforms, while another two wore SAPS reflector vests. These disguises were not just for show—they played a key role in convincing the truck driver and bystanders that the hijackers were legitimate law enforcement officers.

The use of police uniforms in crimes like these is becoming an increasingly concerning trend in Gauteng. It not only facilitates the commission of serious crimes but also erodes public trust in actual police officers.

Gauteng Police: Elite Crime-Fighting Units Lead the Bust

This highly coordinated operation was no accident. The bust followed intelligence received by SAPS Counter-Intelligence, which indicated that a group of suspects involved in a spate of truck hijackings were planning another heist in Ekurhuleni.

Acting swiftly on this tip-off, a powerful multi-agency team was assembled, including:

  • SAPS Tactical Response Team
  • SAPS Anti-Gang Unit
  • Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) Gauteng Tracking Team
  • Gauteng Traffic Police Air Wing
  • CAP Specialised Operations
  • Tracker Connect

This formidable task force moved quickly, intercepting the suspects immediately after the truck was hijacked.

Charges Laid: A Long List of Offenses

The suspects face a string of serious charges, including:

  • Truck hijacking
  • Kidnapping
  • Possession of suspected stolen property
  • Impersonating police officers

In addition, police seized two vehicles—a Hyundai Accent and a Hyundai iX35—which the suspects allegedly used during the hijacking. These vehicles will be processed as part of the ongoing investigation.

Commissioner Of Gauteng Police Mthombeni Praises Operation

Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, the Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner, lauded the police and security teams for their quick response and successful operation.

“This is a great breakthrough as it might help us solve other truck hijackings, especially where suspects disguise themselves as police officers. The operation reflects the success of ongoing partnerships between law enforcement and private security firms,” he said.

He added that this case could help uncover a broader network of truck hijackers operating in Gauteng under the guise of law enforcement.

Police Investigating the Origin of the Uniforms

One major question remains: how did these criminals obtain official police uniforms and reflective gear?

According to Masondo, a parallel investigation is underway to determine the source of the uniforms. It is unclear whether the uniforms were stolen, illegally sold, or fabricated. Police are also working to determine whether the suspects are linked to other unsolved cases of hijacking, robbery, or violent crime in the province.

Gauteng’s Battle Against Truck Hijackings

Truck hijackings are a persistent problem in Gauteng, particularly in industrial zones and high-traffic corridors like Modderfontein Road. These hijackings are often well-planned, involving teams with inside information, stolen goods buyers, and logistical support.

Solar batteries, electronics, and fuel are frequent targets due to their high resale value and demand.

Law enforcement agencies in the province are intensifying efforts to clamp down on syndicates using military-style tactics and deception, such as police impersonation, to ambush drivers and steal cargo.

Public Encouraged to Stay Alert

Police have urged the public, especially logistics companies and truck drivers, to remain vigilant. If any officer appears suspicious or refuses to provide proper identification, the public is advised to contact local authorities immediately.

This arrest demonstrates the power of coordinated intelligence, swift police action, and community cooperation in dismantling criminal operations in the province.

Gauteng Police Wins: A Win for Gauteng’s Fight Against Crime

The arrest of these five hijackers marks a significant achievement in Gauteng’s ongoing war against organised crime. With the recovery of the stolen truck, the rescue of the kidnapped driver, and the seizure of critical evidence, the operation serves as a model for future anti-crime efforts across South Africa.

Authorities hope this high-profile arrest sends a clear message to other criminals: Gauteng is no longer an easy target.
