Gauteng Hospitals Provide Clinical Platforms for CMSA Specialist Training

The Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) is celebrating 70 years of excellence in specialist training, academic leadership, and professional integrity. At the celebration, Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, praised CMSA for its contribution to South Africa’s healthcare system and for shaping generations of specialists.

Speaking at the CMSA 70th Anniversary Conference at the University of Pretoria’s Future Africa Campus, Nkomo-Ralehoko highlighted the critical role Gauteng hospitals play in specialist training.
“The CMSA has been a trusted partner to the Gauteng Department of Health for many years. Through hospitals such as Chris Hani Baragwanath, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg, Steve Biko, and Dr George Mukhari, we provide clinical platforms that make specialist training possible. Together, we have trained generations of doctors who continue to serve with excellence,” she said.
Gauteng Hospitals as Training Platforms for CMSA
Gauteng is South Africa’s medical hub, and its academic hospitals host many of the CMSA’s clinical training programs. These facilities include:
- Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital – a global leader in trauma, surgery, pediatrics, and obstetrics training.
- Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital – affiliated with the University of the Witwatersrand, offering a wide range of CMSA-linked programs.
- Steve Biko Academic Hospital – partnered with the University of Pretoria, known for advanced specialist training.
- Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital – affiliated with Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, supporting specialist growth in northern Gauteng.
These hospitals treat thousands of patients every month. At the same time, they serve as training grounds for doctors preparing for CMSA examinations, ensuring practical skills match theoretical knowledge.
Tackling the Shortage of Specialists
The MEC stressed the urgent need to train more doctors in neonatology, psychiatry, and pediatrics. These fields are vital to Gauteng’s focus on mother, child, and mental health services. By working closely with the CMSA, the province aims to reduce specialist shortages and strengthen public healthcare delivery.

CMSA’s Unique Model of Excellence
The CMSA operates as a nonprofit organisation, driven by more than 11 000 volunteer doctors who contribute their expertise. These professionals examine candidates, mentor trainees, and uphold international standards of excellence.
“This model reflects true collaboration in pursuit of universal health coverage and a more equitable healthcare system,” said Nkomo-Ralehoko.
CMSA and Gauteng’s Shared Commitment
As CMSA marks its platinum anniversary, its partnership with Gauteng hospitals remains central to the future of healthcare in South Africa.
“On behalf of the Gauteng Department of Health, I congratulate the CMSA on its platinum anniversary. We remain committed to working hand in hand with you to ensure that specialist medicine continues to grow, transform, and serve the people of our province and our country,” the MEC concluded.
