Why Registration is Important
Registering for social security benefits is vital because it ensures that former Ekurhuleni mine workers and their families can claim compensation for health issues caused by their work environments. Mining can expose workers to hazardous conditions that may lead to long-term illnesses. Timely registration allows beneficiaries to access medical support, financial compensation, and social assistance that may help improve their quality of life.
Understanding Occupational Diseases
Occupational diseases are illnesses that result directly from workplace conditions. In mining, these often include respiratory diseases like silicosis and tuberculosis, hearing loss due to prolonged noise exposure, and other chronic conditions resulting from hazardous materials or strenuous labor. Recognizing these diseases as work-related qualifies affected workers, including Ekurhuleni ex-mine workers, for certain benefits and compensation.

How the Compensation Will Be Beneficial
The compensation provided through MBOD and related schemes can cover medical costs and provide financial support to those who are no longer able to work due to occupational illnesses. Additionally, it sometimes includes access to pension or provident funds accumulated during a worker’s employment. This financial relief can ease the burden on workers and their families, ensuring basic needs are met.
Registration Progress and Next Steps
As of Monday, 18 August 2025, a total of 1,741 ex-mine workers and their beneficiaries have registered. The Ekurhuleni Ex-Mine Workers eligible will be contacted by the MBOD to assist with submitting claims for occupational diseases and provident/pension funds.
How to Get More Information
For more details on eligibility and the registration process, ex-mine workers and dependents can contact the MBOD Call Centre at 080 1000 240.
Importance of Timely Registration
It is crucial for ex-mine workers, particularly in Ekurhuleni, to register before the closing date to ensure they secure their rightful social security benefits. These benefits provide vital support for work-related health conditions and financial assistance.
The Gauteng Department of Health’s effort to facilitate this process underlines its commitment to the wellbeing of former mine workers in the region.
