Key Responsibilities
As the Deputy Manager Medical Physicist, you will be responsible for:
- Radiation Safety Procedures
- Review radiation safety protocols to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- Provide training to employees regarding radiation protection and protocols.
- Monitor patient radiation doses, especially diagnostic reference levels (DRLs), and prevent incidents in the diagnostic radiology department.
- Monitoring and Reporting
- Manage personnel radiation exposure and prepare over-exposure reports as required by the Department of Health (DoH), the Radiation Control (DoH:RC), and SAHPRA.
- Administer and monitor radiation monitoring devices like dosimeters, including TLD badges and alarm dosimeters.
- Quality Control and Calibration
- Perform quality control checks to ensure radiation safety, better image quality, and overall compliance with national regulations.
- Inspect newly installed imaging systems and verify their specifications.
- Ensure calibration of measuring instruments, including radionuclide calibrators and survey meters, against the national standard.
- Support to Medical Departments
- Provide support to the Radiology, Radiography, Nuclear Medicine, Radiotherapy, and Oncology departments.
- Assist in evaluating facilities and procedures concerning occupational and public safety by performing radiation surveys.
- Facility Inspection and Monitoring
- Perform calculations and inspections of the facility shielding in line with national standards.
- Manage the administration of radioactive materials like Iodine-131 and Lutetium-177 to patients for therapeutic procedures.
- Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with safety procedures and regulations in all aspects of radiation safety and usage.
- Develop and direct a quality control program for imaging systems, radiation protection, and patient safety.
- Other Administrative Duties
- Write and draft specifications for the purchase of radionuclide calibrators or any imaging system.
- Provide consultation and support to other healthcare institutions within the cluster.
- Participate in regular staff meetings and trainings as required by operational needs.
Minimum Requirements
- Educational Qualification:
An appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Physicist. No experience is required after registration. - Skills and Abilities:
- Proficient computer literacy.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage with individuals at various levels and backgrounds.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to work well under pressure.
- Good interpersonal skills and the initiative to work independently and as part of a team.
