COSAFA Cup Shock: South Africa Lose to Mozambique in Cup Opener

South Africa’s 2025 COSAFA Cup campaign began on a sour note on Wednesday, 4 June. They suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Mozambique at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein. The hosts were considered favourites heading into the clash. However, they struggled to convert their dominance into goals. This allowed Os Mambas to walk away with all three points in a historic victory.

Plenty of Possession, But No End Product

The home side started with promise, controlling the tempo of the game and spending much of the first half in Mozambique’s half. Midfielder Kamogelo Sebelebele had an early opportunity to give South Africa the lead with a long-range strike in the 10th minute. Yet, his effort flew over the crossbar. Despite pinning Mozambique back and moving the ball well in the final third, Bafana Bafana failed to make their dominance count on the scoreboard.

By halftime, the match remained goalless, with the hosts left ruing a number of missed chances. Mozambique, on the other hand, were content to absorb pressure and look for opportunities on the counter.

Os Mambas Make History in the Second Half

Mozambique grew into the game after the break. They gained confidence and began to test South Africa’s defence more frequently. Their resilience was rewarded in the 74th minute. Antonio Sumbane found the back of the net, capitalising on a lapse in concentration to slot into an empty goal.

The strike proved decisive, as South Africa failed to mount a comeback in the closing stages. The result marked Mozambique’s first-ever COSAFA Cup win over Bafana Bafana. It was a crucial step in their bid to top Group A.

A Wake-Up Call in Group A

This defeat leaves South Africa at the bottom of their group standings. They have crucial fixtures against Zimbabwe and Mauritius still to come. Ranked 40 spots higher than Mozambique in the FIFA standings, the loss is a disappointing setback for a squad hoping to use the tournament to build momentum ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers.

Coach Vela Khumalo will now be under pressure to reignite the team’s campaign. The next match against Zimbabwe is scheduled for Saturday, 7 June at 15h00. Anything less than a win could see South Africa’s semi-final hopes slipping away.

COSAFA Cup: More Than Just Regional Glory

Beyond the immediate result, the COSAFA Cup is seen as an essential platform for developing emerging talent and enhancing squad depth. For South Africa, the tournament is also a test of tactical flexibility and mental resilience. These qualities will be critical in upcoming continental and global competitions.

With 14 teams competing in this year’s edition, the tournament has brought fresh energy to Bloemfontein. South Africa’s group — comprising Mozambique, Mauritius, and Zimbabwe — now looks increasingly competitive. Every point counts in the race for a semi-final berth.

Next Match Could Define the Campaign

South Africa now face a must-win situation in their second group game. A victory over Zimbabwe is imperative if they hope to stay in contention for the knockout stages. The team must address their finishing issues and ensure sharper execution in front of goal. This is essential if they’re to turn the tide in their favour.

Wednesday’s defeat has served as a harsh reminder that reputation counts for little on the pitch. Especially in regional tournaments where hunger and discipline often prove decisive. The road to redemption begins on Saturday.
