Colleges of Medicine of South Africa Celebrates 70 Years of Medical Excellence

The Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) is celebrating 70 years of specialist training and medical excellence. Since 1954, the organisation has played a key role in shaping South Africa’s healthcare system.

At the CMSA 70th Anniversary Conference, held at the University of Pretoria’s Future Africa Campus, Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko praised its contribution to the sector. She said the CMSA has remained a trusted partner to both doctors and the public.
“The Colleges of Medicine of South Africa has been a trusted partner to the Gauteng Department of Health for many years. Through our central hospitals that include Chris Hani Baragwanath, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg, Steve Biko, and Dr George Mukhari, we provide clinical platforms that make specialist training possible. Together, we have trained generations of doctors who continue to serve with excellence,” said Nkomo-Ralehoko.
CMSA Helps Reduce Specialist Shortages
The MEC stressed the importance of this partnership. She explained that CMSA helps train specialists in high-demand fields like Neonatology, Psychiatry, and Paediatrics. These areas are especially important as Gauteng increases its focus on mother, child, and mental health services.
By creating strong training pathways, the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa is helping reduce the shortage of specialists. This ensures that more South Africans can access quality healthcare without delay.

Powered by Volunteers and Collaboration
Another strength of the CMSA is its unique nonprofit model. The organisation is powered by more than 11 000 volunteers who dedicate their time and skills to training and examinations.
This volunteer-driven approach shows how collaboration can support universal health coverage. It also ensures that professional standards remain high while making healthcare more fair and accessible.
A Strong Legacy and Future
Since its founding in 1954, the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa has grown into a leader in specialist training. Its examinations and qualifications are recognised across South Africa and internationally. Over the years, it has produced thousands of doctors who now serve communities with distinction.
“On behalf of the Gauteng Department of Health, I congratulate the CMSA on its platinum anniversary. We remain committed to working hand in hand with you to ensure that specialist medicine continues to grow, transform, and serve the people of our province and our country,” concluded Nkomo-Ralehoko.
The 70th anniversary is more than a celebration of the past. It is also a reminder that South Africa must continue to invest in specialist training to meet future healthcare needs.
