Power Outages Planned to Ensure Network Reliability

According to notices released by City Power, the planned outages are part of ongoing efforts to improve service reliability and prevent future unplanned power failures. “The interruption is necessary to do essential maintenance work on our network, which is part of our programme of constantly striving to provide a better service,” the utility stated.

These scheduled outages are separate from load shedding and form part of the utility’s preventative maintenance strategy.

First Scheduled Power Outage: Robertsham Substation

The first round of maintenance was set to affect areas on the 16th of April, serviced by the Robertsham Substation. The interruption will take place from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and will impact the following suburbs and surrounding vicinities:

  • Robertsham
  • Robertsham East
  • Robertsham Industrial
  • Harry Street
  • West Turffontein
  • Gillview
  • Theta
  • Framton
  • Hawden/Lakeview North
  • Evans Park

Residents in these areas are urged to make the necessary preparations, including switching off sensitive electronic appliances and ensuring backup power solutions are in place if required.

Easter Weekend Relief

In a welcome move for families planning to celebrate Easter, no power outages are scheduled during the Easter long weekend. From Good Friday (18 April) through Easter Monday, residents can expect an uninterrupted power supply to support religious services, family gatherings, and festive activities.

This scheduled relief demonstrates City Power’s awareness of the importance of maintaining stability during significant public holidays and its commitment to balancing maintenance needs with resident convenience.

Second Scheduled Power Outage: Moffat Substation

Shortly after the Easter break, a second planned outage is scheduled for Wednesday, 23 April, affecting customers linked to the Moffat Substation. This interruption will also run from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, impacting a broad area in southern Johannesburg, including:

  • City Deep Extensions
  • Elandspark
  • Electron
  • Elladoone
  • Unigray
  • Klipriviersberg Estate
  • Regents Park and extensions
  • Steeledale
  • Regents Park Estate
  • Roseacre and extensions
  • Moffat View and extensions
  • Rosettenville
  • Rewlatch and extensions
  • The Hill and extensions

City Power has urged affected residents to plan ahead for this outage, especially businesses and facilities that rely heavily on electricity during daytime operations.

Important Safety Reminder from City Power

As part of its public announcements, City Power issued an important safety advisory: “As the supply may be restored at any time, customers are urged to always treat their electricity supply points as live.” This means all electrical equipment and outlets should be handled with caution throughout the scheduled outage window to prevent injury or damage.

Apology and Continued Commitment

City Power concluded both announcements with an apology to residents for the inconvenience the outages may cause. “City Power regrets any inconvenience that may be caused by this interruption,” the utility stated.

These scheduled outages highlight City Power’s efforts to maintain Johannesburg’s aging power infrastructure while ensuring minimal disruption during peak public holidays. While inconvenient, such maintenance is essential to reducing unplanned outages in the long term.
