Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs Head to Europe for Pre-Season Camps

As preparations for the upcoming 2025/26 Premier Soccer League season intensify, South Africa’s most iconic football rivals, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, are gearing up for European pre-season training camps. Domestic campaigns are officially wrapped up. Both sides are now focused on bolstering their squads and refining their strategies abroad.

Kaizer Chiefs Head to the Netherlands

Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed that their pre-season schedule will see them travel to the Netherlands from 3 to 19 July. This European stint is part of a wider effort to reboot the team after a dismal league finish last season. Amakhosi slumped to tenth on the table then.

Despite this poor showing, head coach Nasreddine Nabi is still expected to retain his position. The Tunisian tactician, who did deliver a Nedbank Cup title, appears to have the club’s backing for now. However, with expectations high, a slow start to the new season could put him firmly in the spotlight.

On the player front, there has been significant movement. Departures include Njabulo Blom, Samkelo Radebe and Ranga Chivaviro, while Chiefs are being strongly linked with several reinforcements. Notably, Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane—both recently released by Pirates—are on the radar. Sundowns left-back Terrence Mashego is another potential target. Amakhosi are also believed to be chasing Pyramids FC forward Fiston Mayele to strengthen their attack.

As is often the case with Chiefs, official announcements may only come much later, despite ongoing speculation. However, it is clear that Amakhosi are planning an aggressive recruitment drive. They hope to mount a serious challenge next season.

Orlando Pirates Set Sights on Spain

Orlando Pirates, meanwhile, will be heading to Spain for their pre-season activities during July. This camp is expected to serve as a key foundation. The club aims to rebuild a squad capable of pushing for major honors again, particularly amid questions around the coaching setup.

With Jose Riveiro’s tenure reportedly over, speculation is rife that Rulani Mokwena could be on his way back to the Buccaneers. Mokwena, recently released by Wydad Casablanca, remains the leading candidate to take over the reins at the Soweto giants. Pirates are eager to finalize his appointment before their European departure.

On the transfer front, the Buccaneers are already making moves. A deal has been agreed with Chippa United for striker Sinoxolo Kwayiba, who recently netted his debut goal for Bafana Bafana. In addition, Baroka FC full-back Tshepho Mashiloane has also joined the Pirates ranks. With several more signings reportedly on the horizon, fans can expect a busy transfer window for the Sea Robbers.

Soweto Giants Sharpen Focus on Redemption

As both clubs jet off for their respective European tours, there’s a shared understanding among them. The upcoming season cannot mirror the previous one. Chiefs are eager to reclaim their former glory after years of underachievement. At the same time, Pirates are looking to stabilize their leadership and challenge consistently on all fronts.

These international camps won’t just test fitness—they’ll also play a crucial role in squad cohesion, tactical development, and team morale. Supporters across the country will be watching closely. They are hopeful that this overseas groundwork pays dividends in the battles ahead.
