Nabi Reflects on Missed Chances After Chiefs’ Draw with Sundowns

Wednesday night’s clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns ended in a goalless draw, but the result was more than just a point apiece. Both teams had their chances, and despite the absence of goals, the intensity and tactical shifts throughout the game kept fans on the edge of their seats.

A Strong Start for Chiefs Under Nabi
Nasreddine Nabi made his long-awaited return to the Kaizer Chiefs bench after missing the first three matches of the season due to family commitments in Tunisia. Despite the goalless scoreline, the Tunisian coach left the pitch with a sense of both pride and disappointment.
“We could have got the three points,” Nabi said post-match. “But there was a good team in front of us. We have a little bit of regret not getting the win today, but we will work and look ahead to the future.”
The Chiefs are still unbeaten in the league after four matches, a promising start for a team that struggled last season, finishing in ninth place. Moreover, they have yet to concede a goal, a significant achievement considering the attacking threats posed by Sundowns. But Nabi was quick to point out that while the defence has been solid, they should have capitalised on the chances they created.
“Yes, we have not lost yet, but we believe tonight we could have got more,” Nabi admitted. “We appreciate that we are going in the right direction and we are going to work better for the next game.”
Sundowns’ Struggles with Chiefs’ Pressure
Mamelodi Sundowns, the reigning champions, had their own frustrations after the match. Despite controlling possession and looking to dominate in the second half, they couldn’t break down the resilient Chiefs defence. Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso acknowledged that his team struggled with the intensity of Chiefs’ play, particularly in the first half.
“Chiefs didn’t allow us to play our normal way,” Cardoso said. “After the 51st minute, we understood which spaces to exploit and brought the ball into those areas. We took control of the match, but some negative emotions resurfaced, the same ones that cost us in the last two matches where we conceded late goals.”
Cardoso also praised his players for their resilience, despite not getting the desired result. “I’m proud of the fight and resilience the boys showed,” he said. But with Sundowns now in third place on eight points, they will be looking to bounce back as they continue their quest for the league title.
What Does This Draw Mean for Both Teams?
For Kaizer Chiefs, the point extends their unbeaten run to four matches and solidifies their strong defensive start. However, Nabi will be disappointed with the missed opportunities. Chiefs could have easily taken all three points, given the chances they had in front of goal.
For Sundowns, the draw represents another setback in their bid for an early lead in the league. While they moved up to third place, their inability to convert chances, coupled with their inconsistent form, will be cause for concern.
Both teams will now look ahead to their next fixtures, hoping to sharpen their finishing and avoid any more slip-ups as the season progresses.
