Coach Khumalo on Broos’ Plans to Strengthen Senior Team with Cosafa Cup Stars

Despite Bafana Bafana’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Angola in the COSAFA Cup final at the Free State Stadium, coach Vela Khumalo remains upbeat about the tournament’s impact — especially its role in unearthing talent for the senior national side. While the team fell short of lifting the trophy, Khumalo believes the squad’s performance offered valuable insights and showcased players ready to make the step up.

Young Guns Impress in Testing Conditions

Speaking after the final, Khumalo praised his young side, which included several players on the verge of full national selection. The tournament, he explained, was less about results and more about gauging who can be considered for Hugo Broos’ senior team moving forward.

“I think it was a productive campaign,” Khumalo said. “We used this stage to assess players who could reinforce the senior team. The boys deserve recognition for stepping up — some came straight out of recess, trained for just two days, and still managed to perform.”

Preparation Pays Off, But Finishing Still a Concern

Although pleased with the general standard of play, Khumalo admitted there are still areas needing improvement — particularly in front of goal.

“We moved the ball well and showed good organisation. But we need more firepower up front. That’s our main shortcoming — we’re creating opportunities but not converting them. Identifying the right strikers who can finish will be critical going forward.”

Broos to Make the Final Call

Khumalo underlined that the ultimate decision on which players will be promoted lies with Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos. However, he’s confident that the COSAFA Cup has spotlighted individuals who can immediately add value to the senior squad.

“This tournament was an important scouting platform for coach Broos,” said Khumalo. “There are definitely a few players who’ve put up their hands. It’s now up to him to assess who fits into his plans. We’ve seen talent that deserves to be in the senior national setup.”

Rising Stars Emerge From the Shadows

Among the standout performers were defender Ime Okon, centre-back Aden McCarthy, and midfielder Kamogelo Sebelebele — all of whom delivered solid displays throughout the tournament. Their composure, tactical awareness, and work ethic have drawn the attention of national selectors and fans alike.

“These kinds of tournaments are gold for us,” Khumalo added. “They allow us to give opportunities to players not often in the spotlight. We have a deep pool of talent in the country — the COSAFA Cup is just one way to tap into it.”

Next Generation Ready to Step Up

While silverware evaded the team this year, the COSAFA Cup has served as a springboard for the next wave of local stars. Khumalo’s hope — echoed by many in the football community — is that Broos will act on the promise shown by several of these young players and integrate them into the senior fold.

For now, the spotlight shifts to Broos and his upcoming squad selections. But if the COSAFA Cup was any indication, the future of Bafana Bafana could be in capable hands.
