Gauteng’s CAF Champions League Dominance Doubles as a Marketing Win for South Africa

Cape Town, The Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA) the official destination marketing agency for the Gauteng City Region is elated by the splendid performance by our golden teams participating in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League this season. Not only have our top teams, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns dazzled their opponents at home, but they went on to put courageous performances during the away legs earning the respect of the hosting fans, media, and the football fraternity at large.

For us in Gauteng these performances reinforces our standing and positioning as the Home of Champions and Africa’s leading sports entertainment destination in shape and form. We are super proud of our golden players and draw courage from their performances as we continue to mainstream sports tourism as an important element of our destination Gauteng marketing mix, explains GTA CEO Sthembiso Dlamini.

Since yesterday (Wednesday 9th April) the GTA and its marketing partners, the Constitution Hill, Gautrain, Dinokeng Projects and the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Sites are at the World Travel Market Africa tourism trade show in Cape Town to showcase the golden province’s offerings and new products as we build-up to the hosting of G20 World Leaders Summit in November 2025.

Part of the new tourism itineraries and products on show at this important global travel platform is the newly launched Mandela Legacy World Heritage Sites Series, the #SportingGP and #MusicalGP routes which we believe will revolutionaries tourism development, marketing, and growth in Gauteng.

The province of Gauteng now boost a fully developed sporting route covering the globally acclaimed FNB Stadium, the SA Sports Hall of Fame, SAFA Head Office, Orlando Stadium, Emirates Park, Rand Stadium, Naturena Chiefs Village, DP World Wanderers Stadium, Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Supersport Park, Pildich Stadium and a host of quality township sporting infrastructure and living legends.

On the musical tourism side the province pride itself as the undisputed home of Amapiano music with all the major townships in Gauteng playing a leading role in birthing, developing, and globalizing this much-loved musical genre and popular culture. Townships like Daveyton, Alexandra, Mamelodi, Soweto and Tembisa continuously battle it out to determine which one is the original home of Amapiano but for us o’ksalayo GAUTENG is the home of Amapiano, reiterated Dlamini.

What these new tourism experiences brings into the tourism marketing mix for Gauteng is opportunities to effect sustained transformation of the sector with new players especially from the previously disadvantage communities. Former sports players and legends can now be trained as sports tourism route tourist guides, they can form their new destination marketing companies and some of the artists and musicians can also form part of the music route experience and showcase now also diversifying their revenue streams, this is what really excites us as the Gauteng Tourism Authority.

With the 5-star performances dished by our team, sporting fans supporting and responding in their huge numbers, and our broadcasters continue to beam excellent productions across Africa and the world, the stage is set for South Africa and Gauteng to take advantage of these positive development and anchor the marketing and promotion of brand South Africa and the golden province on these important pillars of social cohesion, nation building and total country happiness.

Gauteng Tourism showcase at wtm Africa ends tomorrow (Friday 11th April 2025) with golf tourism, Gauteng musical events like hey Neighbour, Ultra SA, Joy of Jazz, and specially curated events to leverage the G20 Summit taking the center stage. We mean business with the business of sporting, music, lifestyle, and entertainment in Gauteng.
