Wits Digital Dome Special Show: African Mythology Reimagined in 360°

Johannesburg’s premier high-tech edutainment hub is pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling this month. The newly upgraded Wits Anglo American Digital Dome is officially hosting a mesmerising, limited-run screening titled Immersive – Step Inside Our Stories. This specially curated 30-minute feature completely bypasses the traditional astronomy lecture, utilizing the venue’s massive 8K digital projection system to envelop audiences in an entirely artistic exploration of African history, spirituality, and contemporary mythmaking.

Double Feature: Tracing Legends from Danxomè to Modern Myth

The Immersive – Step Inside Our Stories production is beautifully split into two distinct, visually arresting short films that run back-to-back:

  • Kancícà (“Link” in Fongbe): This segment serves as a deeply moving art and film experience that traces the historical journey of Na Agontimé, the famous queen-mother of the Kingdom of Danxomè. The narrative vividly illustrates the living cultural heritage, resilience, and ancestral memory that she and millions of others carried across the Atlantic Ocean through generations.

  • Kwasukasukela (“In the Beginning” in Zulu): Presented in partnership with the Fak’ugesi Festival, this portion functions as a vibrant, contemporary African creation myth. It takes traditional spiritual deities and boldly transforms them into stylized, modern-day characters. The result is a stunning futuristic reimagining of how African mythology can help reshape our collective understanding of the past, present, and future.

Critical Health, Safety, and Venue Rules

Because the Digital Dome offers an incredibly intense 360-degree sensory environment, the University of the Witwatersrand enforces strict operational policies for all public screenings:

Age Restriction Notice: Children under the age of 5 years are strictly not permitted inside the auditorium under any circumstances, as the booming surround sound and sweeping visuals can easily overwhelm younger senses.

Furthermore, late entry is absolutely forbidden once the auditorium doors close. Because navigating campus security gates and finding parking on East Campus takes time, you should aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled slot. Please note that this specific special show focuses entirely on digital art and does not include a live night sky or stargazing demonstration.
