African Glory and World Cup Qualification on the Line for SA Hockey Teams in Egypt

South Africa’s hockey elite are preparing for a high-stakes mission in Egypt this October. Both the men’s and women’s national teams are eyeing continental dominance and a coveted place at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup.

The African Cup of Nations, set for 11–18 October in Ismailia, Egypt, is the only gateway to the global showpiece in Belgium and the Netherlands. For South Africa, it’s more than just a tournament. It’s a chance to reinforce their reign as Africa’s hockey powerhouse.

Women’s Team: Chasing History

The SA women arrive as undisputed queens of African hockey, having clinched the title an unmatched seven times in a row. An eighth successive crown would write a new chapter in the country’s sporting history.

Head coach Inky Zondi is confident his squad is primed for the challenge.

“This group has the talent, the experience, and the drive to compete at the highest level. We know the stakes the African title and a place at the World Cup and we’re ready to embrace the challenge.”

The team welcomes three newcomers: Ane’ Janse van Vuuren, Caylin Maree, and Jeanri Thomas. All of them earned their call-ups after standout performances at the recent Interprovincial Tournament in Cape Town. Nine Olympians from Paris also return to bolster the squad.

Men’s Team: Defending the Crown

The men’s side remains an immovable force in African hockey, chasing their ninth continental crown since rejoining the international scene. The last time Ismailia hosted the event, in 2017, they lifted the trophy in dominant fashion. It is a feat they aim to repeat.

Five fresh talents: Ayakha Mthalane, Cullin de Jager, Brendan du Toit, Neil Raath, and Ryan Mann are set to make their senior debuts in the green and gold.

SA Hockey high-performance director Reggie Smith knows the challenge ahead is real.

“We have an incredible track record at the African Cup of Nations, but we take nothing for granted. Every team will go to Egypt determined to stop us. This group is ready for that fight our goal is clear, retain the title and book our ticket to the World Cup.”

The Road to October

With a blend of youthful energy and seasoned experience in both squads, South Africa is bracing for a fierce fight in Ismailia. Two titles, two tickets to the World Cup, and African glory are all on the line.
