Ex-Kaizer Chiefs Star Enters Rehab, Misses International Opportunity

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Kgaogelo Sekgota has been forced to put his football ambitions on hold after checking into a rehabilitation facility in Limpopo, South Africa, due to marijuana use. The setback has seen him miss out on a promising move to a Moroccan club, as confirmed by officials at the Hope of Achievers Rehabilitation Centre.
Sekgota’s Journey Takes a Turn
Sekgota, who departed from Kaizer Chiefs in 2023, spent the following season with Stellenbosch FC before joining Magesi FC. He was part of the Magesi squad that clinched the Carling Knockout Cup, marking a positive turn in his playing career. However, personal challenges have since interrupted his progress.
Watson Luandi, CEO of the Hope of Achievers Rehabilitation Centre, confirmed that Sekgota is currently undergoing treatment at their facility. He is one of three professional footballers receiving support at the centre, alongside former Bafana Bafana player Lerato Chabangu and Yamkela Phalane.
Clarifying the Substance Use
In an interview with Soccer Laduma, Luandi addressed public speculation around Sekgota’s condition.
“Firstly, I want to thank the NKRL Foundation for the work they do to support players in crisis,” Luandi said. “Our mission is to help these players rebuild their lives with dignity, on and off the field.”
Luandi clarified that Sekgota is not involved with hard drugs but is dealing specifically with marijuana use. “This is an issue that can be effectively managed with proper rehabilitation,” he explained. “He is showing good progress and is working hard to turn his life around.”
Future Still Holds Promise
While the rehab centre is not in a position to dictate whether players should return to the pitch, Luandi expressed optimism about Sekgota’s recovery and reintegration into society. He noted that Sekgota is still under contract with a professional club, although Magesi FC has not issued a formal statement regarding the player’s current status.
“There was definite interest from a club in Morocco,” Luandi revealed. “His family is hopeful he can recover fully and pursue that opportunity or others like it in the near future. He’s still young and his story isn’t over.”
A Sobering Reminder
Sekgota’s situation serves as a reminder of the personal pressures and challenges faced by professional athletes. Despite talent and potential, off-field struggles can derail even the most promising careers. But with the right support structures, recovery and redemption remain within reach.
As he continues treatment, fans and clubs alike will be watching closely, hopeful that Sekgota can make a strong comeback—both in life and in football.
