Key Responsibilities of the Foreman: Electrical
The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day maintenance and management of the University’s electrical systems. The main duties and responsibilities of the position include:
1. Preventative Maintenance
One of the primary functions of the foreman will be performing preventative maintenance on electrical systems to ensure that they remain in optimal working condition. This involves monitoring equipment, identifying potential issues before they become serious, and addressing them proactively.
2. Managing Electrical Installations
The foreman will oversee specialized installations, including those in explosive areas and high tension (HT) 11 KVA systems. Managing domestic installations and ensuring that they are functioning efficiently and safely is also a significant part of the role.
3. Supervising Contractors
Another important aspect of the job involves supervising contractors on-site, ensuring they are following safety protocols, adhering to work schedules, and maintaining high standards of workmanship.
4. Reporting and Documentation
The foreman will be required to compile monthly reports and complete weekly job cards on the Archibus system. Maintaining accurate records is essential for tracking progress, managing resources, and ensuring compliance with University policies and health and safety standards.
5. Team Management and Staff Development
As a leader, the foreman will be responsible for planning and scheduling staff, ensuring that tasks are completed on time and to the required standards. The role also involves assisting in the development and training of team members to improve their skills and performance.
6. Resource Management
Ordering materials, spare parts, and ensuring that all necessary resources are available for the team will be another crucial duty. This includes compiling material specifications and managing inventory effectively.
7. Ensuring Compliance with Safety Standards
Adherence to Occupational Health and Safety regulations and risk assessments will be a priority for the foreman. The position requires knowledge of building regulations and health and safety protocols to ensure the safety of the staff, contractors, and the entire UJ campus.
8. Standby and Overtime Duties
The foreman will also be required to perform standby duties and work overtime as needed to address urgent electrical issues that may arise outside regular working hours.
Minimum Requirements for the Role
To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Educational Qualifications: A National Diploma in Electrical Engineering (NQF Level 6) or an equivalent qualification.
- Experience: At least three to five years of electrical supervisory experience, with hands-on experience in electrical installations and maintenance.
- Certification: A valid Installation Electrician certificate is essential, along with a valid Code 8 driver’s license.
- Skills and Competencies: The candidate should possess good planning, organizational, and communication skills, both written and verbal. Knowledge of Building Regulations, health and safety regulations, and computer literacy (especially MS Office suite) are important for the role. Additionally, strong people management skills and the ability to work under pressure are required.
Additional Recommendations
While not mandatory, the following qualifications and skills would be an advantage:
- Knowledge of UJ’s Oracle System.
- Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), particularly Archibus.
