Cullinan Diamond Mine Tours: Explore World’s The Most Famous Diamonds

Tucked away just 40 kilometres east of Pretoria lies the legendary Cullinan Diamond Mine. This mine is a glittering symbol of South Africa’s rich mining history. Offering exclusive surface tours, the mine welcomes curious adventurers eager to discover the secrets behind some of the world’s most famous and valuable diamonds.
A Legacy Carved in Stone
The Cullinan Diamond Mine was formerly known as the Premier Mine and was established in 1902. The mine quickly made its mark on history with the discovery of the Cullinan Diamond in 1905. Weighing a staggering 3,106 carats (or 621 grams), it remains the largest rough gem-quality diamond ever found. The diamond was named after Thomas Cullinan, the mine’s chairman at the time, and was then cut to produce two of the most iconic diamonds in the British Crown Jewels: the Great Star of Africa (530 carats) and the Lesser Star of Africa (317 carats).
In 2003, the mine was renamed Cullinan to honor this historical find and reinforce its link to the regal past. Today, under the stewardship of Petra Diamonds, the mine continues to operate as one of the most prolific sources of gem-quality stones, particularly the extremely rare and valuable blue diamonds.
Discover the Mine on a Surface Tour
Although underground tours have been suspended indefinitely, the Cullinan Diamond Mine Surface Tour offers a captivating glimpse into the world of diamond mining without ever needing to venture below the earth’s surface.
Tours run daily at 10:00 and 12:00, lasting between 1.5 to 2 hours. During this time, visitors are treated to a guided exploration of the working mine, including a look at conveyor belts carrying ore to the surface, explanations of the mining and sorting processes, and insights into the lives of miners who work in shifts deep underground.
