Comrades 2025: Emotional Gerda Steyn Clinches Her Fourth Victory

Gerda Steyn has firmly established herself as the country’s queen of ultra-distance running after powering to an extraordinary fourth Comrades Marathon victory in Durban on Sunday. The 35-year-old trailblazer rewrote the history books by becoming the first South African woman to claim four titles in the gruelling “Ultimate Human Race,” breaking free from a tie previously shared with five local legends who each had three wins.
Commanding Comrades’ Performance
Steyn dominated the 89km down run between Pietermaritzburg and Durban—an event that drew over 20,000 participants. Her performance not only secured her third consecutive title but also made her the most decorated female athlete in the event’s rich history. Her triumph was a testament to both endurance and excellence.
Three Clubs, One Champion
Adding to the significance of her victory, Steyn became the first South African to win the Comrades Marathon representing three different clubs. She first won under the Nedbank Running Club banner in 2019, followed by back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024 for Phantane Athletics Club. This year, her fourth win came while donning the colours of Hollywood Athletics Club.
A Historic Double Feat
Steyn also accomplished another rare milestone—completing the Comrades and Two Oceans Marathon double for the third time in a single year, a feat unmatched by any other athlete. She stopped the clock at 5 hours, 51 minutes, and 19 seconds, earning an impressive R1.5 million-plus in prize money. This included R874,000 for the overall win, R500,000 for maintaining a high average speed, and an additional R220,000 for being the first South African woman to cross the line.
Relentless Rivals and Roaring Cheers
Although she crossed the finish line in triumph, Steyn didn’t have it all her way. Russian athlete Alexandra Morozova pushed her right to the end, finishing just behind in 5:55:56. Kenya’s Shelmith Muriuki also made headlines by becoming the first Kenyan woman to place in the top ten, securing third in 6:07:56.
The final moments were electrifying. The crowd at People’s Park erupted as Steyn broke the tape, greeted with a rose by Olympic icon Caster Semenya—an emotional celebration for a deeply hard-fought race.
A Victory Steeped in Emotion
Visibly moved, Steyn reflected on what this win means for her legacy. “I’m standing on the shoulders of great athletes who’ve come before me. Winning this for the third time in a row, and a fourth overall, is incredibly special,” she said.
She noted how each title has come with its own journey, and the consistency of her performances proves her staying power. “I didn’t win once and disappear. I’ve shown up, race after race, and given my best,” she added.
Hollywood Moment for Hollywood Club
Steyn paid special tribute to Hollywood Athletics Club, praising the supportive environment that allowed her to thrive without pressure. “They never demanded victory; they simply believed in me. That trust helped me perform at my best,” she said.
She also thanked her family for their unwavering support and confirmed that she’ll take a short break before shifting focus to her next marathon challenge later in the year.
An Icon for the Ages
With each stride, Steyn has gone beyond records—she’s carved out a legacy of grit, passion, and inspiration. Her fourth Comrades title is not just a victory; it’s a moment of national pride and a shining beacon for generations of runners to come.
