Comrades 2025 Down Run: Distance Confirmed and It’s a Test of Endurance

This year’s Comrades Marathon promises to push athletes to their limits, with the official race distance now confirmed at a challenging 89.98 kilometres — just about 90km! The 2025 edition of the world-famous ultra-marathon will take place on Sunday, 8 June. It will take runners on a demanding Down Run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

A Near-Century-Old Legacy Continues

The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) revealed the official race distance early on Thursday, sharing their excitement at what lies ahead. This year’s race marks the 98th edition overall, and notably, the 49th Down Run in the event’s storied history.

Alain Dalais, General Manager of the CMA, expressed pride in the confirmed route, saying: “This meticulously measured course captures the heart of The Ultimate Human Race. It promises an unforgettable test of stamina and determination for every participant.”

A New-Look Finish in Durban

A significant change for 2025 is the return to a street finish, which hasn’t happened in several years. The finish line will be situated outside People’s Park in Durban, positioned in the northbound lanes of Masabalala Yengwa Avenue.

Spectators are in for a treat, as a grandstand will be set up in the southbound lanes to provide an up-close view of the emotional final moments. People’s Park will also host an entertainment and hospitality zone. Areas will be allocated for running club tents on either side of the finish.

The CMA believes this change will make the event more festive and inclusive. It will offer smoother logistics for runners and a better experience for the crowd. The previous Down Run in 2023 covered 87.7km, making this year’s edition longer and more demanding.

Two Start Times, One Challenge

Another key update for this year’s race is the introduction of two separate start times: 5:45am and 6:00am. Runners will be divided into two groups identified by orange or purple race numbers. They will finish in color-coordinated chutes in Durban.

Despite the staggered starts, all runners will still have 12 hours to complete the race. This maintains the traditional cut-off that defines the prestige and pressure of the Comrades.

Why the Distance Matters

The confirmation of the 89.98km course serves as a reminder of the incredible mental and physical strength required to complete this iconic event. It’s not just about the distance, but also the heat, the terrain, and the sheer emotional rollercoaster from start to finish.

In our country, the Comrades Marathon remains a symbol of unity and national pride. Whether you’re watching from the sidelines or tackling each hill with grit and purpose, the event brings together people from all walks of life. Clubs across the country are now finalizing training schedules, accommodation, and travel plans. They know that the Down Run is always a bit more punishing on the legs.

Many veteran runners consider this year’s nearly 90km stretch to be one of the toughest versions in recent memory. As the excitement builds and preparations intensify, one thing is certain — the 2025 Comrades Marathon will once again live up to its name as “The Ultimate Human Race”.
