The Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria (Javett-UP) is an NGO which opened its doors in September 2019 and now welcome thousands of visitors including local and international university students, learners, tourists, members of the diplomatic community, members of the media, academia and the general public.
Established as a partnership between the Javett Foundation and the University of Pretoria, the Javett-UP offers an experience that fosters enjoyment, wellness and enlightenment, while promoting a dynamic worldview. With one foot firmly rooted in academia, and the other embedded in the public, Javett-UP engages with the histories of Africa’s creative outputs and future aspirations of the continent and the diaspora.
As custodian of important collections on long-term loan, visitors can view the Javett Family’s private collection, the Bongi Dhlomo Collection of Black South African artists of the 20th Century, the South32 Collection, the AngloGold Ashanti Barbier-Mueller Collection from West Africa, and selected items from the Mapungubwe collection, including the world-famous Golden Rhino.
Temporary exhibitions are eclectic and varied, showcasing different disciplines and the full range and depth of Pan-African expression. Running alongside each exhibition is a carefully curated transdisciplinary programme of educational activities, live performances, workshops, film screenings, discussions, and symposia.
