Johannesburg – as South Africa continues to showcase its prowess in global diplomatic and multilateral platforms, the golden province of GAUTENG is set to receive record-breaking tourism arrivals and spend this festive summer.
Gauteng’s tourism outlook is boosted by the successful hosting of the G20 World Leaders’ Summit and improved air connectivity with key markets such as Germany, the UAE, Asia, and the Americas leading the charge. Underpinned by that, Gauteng is set to contribute massively to the current 7.8million international arrivals from January to September of 2025 up by 1.1million year-on-year.
G20 countries account for more than 78% of the global population and the 58% international visitors arrivals increase this year from the Middle East alone bear testimony to the importance of member countries in driving intra-travel, trade, cultural exchanges, people-to-people relations and best practices.
With the G20 World Leaders’ Summit hosting coinciding with the country’s summer and spring into the festive season period, we are anticipating many of the delegates, advanced teams, media and captains of industries to stay behind and take advantage of Johannesburg, GAUTENG and South-Africa’s warm weather, blue skies and world-class hospitality rooted in Ubuntu.
This coming March, Gauteng is set to play champion host to another big global sporting event, the LIV International Golf Tournament. As highlighted by President Ramaphosa during his visit to Washington earlier this year, some of the global diplomatic tensions can easily be brokered in the golf course and not in boardrooms or summit halls.
“Thousands of delegates, South African business executives, leaders of governments and civil society leaders used to hosting of various G20 related site events to network and engage using the province’s splendid golf courses and heritage sites, a perfect for destination Gauteng, South Africa and Africa”, explained Gauteng MEC for Finance & Economic Development Lebogang Maile.
With the country’s wine exports up by 58%, South African Amapiano music which is birthed in the golden province of Gauteng at all-time high rotation and generating sustained revenue for our creative sector, the G20 World Leaders’ Summit Johannesburg declaration with its emphasis on fair and equitable financing mechanism comes in as a massive boost for creative city region like Gauteng. Transparent and fair metadata calculations from global platforms like YouTube and Google will go a long way in leveling the playing fields between global North and South content creators who are central in sharing and telling the destination story.
By end of January next year, the province is projecting over 1.7million international arrivals and R4.2billion tourism revenue leveraging the successful hosting of the G20 World Leaders’ Summit and its related site global events, pre and post tours, the hosting of quality #MusicalGP events, and leisure and adventure experiences some related to BAFANA BAFANA’s participation at AFCON 2025 in Morocco.
“Without a doubt, the excellent hosting of the G20 World Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg bodes well for the province, the city, and country’s bid for Formula 1 events from 2027 and further sets a blue-print in terms of preparations for the hosting of the Cricket World Cup in the same year with Gauteng having more venues accredited than any other province,” concluded Maile.
