Far Gone is a deeply moving one-man theatre production by Roots Mbili Theatre, originally co-produced with Sheffield Theatres.
Inspired by Ugandan-born actor and writer John Rwothomack’s real-life experience of nearly being kidnapped by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), the play tells the powerful story of a young boy, Okumu, whose life is forever changed when his village in Northern Uganda is attacked.
Through a unique blend of humour, poetry, and intense physical theatre, Far Gone chronicles Okumu’s harrowing journey from childhood innocence to becoming a child soldier.
The performance strikes a profound emotional chord, highlighting the trauma endured by thousands of children abducted by the LRA and drawing attention to ongoing conflicts in Africa.
First performed in 2019, Far Gone enjoyed a successful national tour in South Africa in 2022 and has since toured internationally across the USA, Taiwan, and Europe, including Sheffield, Manchester, and London.
The production is directed by Nigerian theatre-maker Mojisola Kareem and has received critical acclaim for its raw and truthful storytelling.
The South African performances will take place from 19 to 22 November 2025 at The Lesedi Theatre, Joburg Theatre, Johannesburg.
Quotes from John Rwothomack:
“This play is not about me, the kid who was lucky enough to escape. This play is for the hundreds of thousands who did not.
For the future generations who will continue to suffer the trauma the LRA has imprinted on them for many years to come.”
