Omoda C7 Set to Debut at Durban July: Chery’s New Plug-in Hybrid SUV

Omoda & Jaecoo, the rising stars of Chery’s premium offshoot, are ready to make waves once again, this time at one of South Africa’s most iconic events, the Durban July. The all-new Omoda C7, a plug-in hybrid SUV, is set to make its first public appearance at the prestigious horse racing and fashion spectacle. This will happen before it hits the local market in the coming weeks.
Bridging the Gap Between the C5 and C9
Positioned neatly between the Omoda C5 X-Series and the range-topping C9, the C7 represents the brand’s latest step in filling out its SUV lineup. Initially unveiled in Thailand in March and showcased again at the Beijing International Auto Show in April, the production-ready C7 arrives with bold aspirations. It has a strong focus on electrified performance.

Electrified Power, Refined for South Africa
Under the Super Hybrid System (SHS) badge, the C7 will be introduced exclusively as a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV). While the Thai version of the SUV generates 265kW and 530Nm, the South African-spec model will arrive with slightly reduced output for local adaptation. Yet it still boasts a robust 255kW and 525Nm.
This potent setup combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine (T-GDI) with an 18.4-kWh lithium-ion battery. This setup delivers power to a rear-mounted electric motor. The system mirrors what was recently introduced in Jaecoo’s J7 SHS, including a single-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) for smooth transitions between electric and petrol drive modes.
With an all-electric range of 105 km and a total hybrid driving range of 1,200 km, the C7 SHS strikes an impressive balance between efficiency and capability. However, due to detuned specs for South Africa, the combined range is expected to decrease by approximately 50 km. This is offset by a longer pure-electric range of 15 km more than its Thai counterpart.

Performance & Charging
Though it claims a 0-100 km/h time of 8.5 seconds abroad, the local version is expected to be marginally slower due to its altered output. The C7 supports DC fast charging at speeds up to 40 kW. This allows a 30% to 80% top-up in just 20 minutes — ideal for busy urban lifestyles.

This places it above the C5 X-Series (currently priced from R465,900) and below the C9 (starting at R785,900). It provides a compelling mid-range option in the hybrid SUV segment.
The Durban July may be known for high fashion and high stakes, but this year, it’s the Omoda C7 turning heads. With its debut marking a significant milestone for Chery’s electrified ambitions in South Africa, the C7 SHS is not only a symbol of innovation. It is also a clear signal that the brand is ready to challenge the mainstream with style, substance, and sustainability.
