Johannesburg residents are currently facing significant water supply disruptions due to extensive maintenance work on critical infrastructure by Rand Water. This maintenance, which started on June 30 and will continue until July 21, 2025, has caused widespread water outages and reduced pressure across multiple areas of the city. In response, Joburg Water has deployed water tankers to assist affected communities as taps run dry.

Extensive Maintenance Causes Citywide Water Interruptions
Rand Water’s 21-day maintenance programme targets key bulk water supply systems, including the Eikenhof and Zwartkopjes plants, which serve large parts of Johannesburg. This essential upgrade aims to improve the long-term reliability, capacity, and efficiency of the water supply network. However, the short-term impact is severe, with many residents experiencing complete water outages or significantly reduced water pressure.
Affected areas include Soweto, Randburg, Roodepoort, Lenasia, Crown Gardens, Brixton, Hursthill, Crosby, Aeroton, and Naturena. During the initial phase, water pumping was halted for six hours, followed by a period of 50% capacity for 42 hours, before gradually increasing to 80% for the remainder of the maintenance period. Despite the completion of some repairs, full restoration of normal water pressure will take several days as reservoirs and water towers refill.
Tankers Provide Temporary Relief Amid Water Shortages
To mitigate the impact on residents, Joburg Water has deployed water tankers to supply water to areas experiencing outages. These tankers serve as a critical stopgap measure, ensuring that communities have access to essential water supplies while the infrastructure recovers. Residents are advised to make use of these services and to store water in advance where possible.
Challenges in Restoring Water Supply
Although some repairs, such as those on the Zwartkopjes system, have been completed, technical challenges have reduced pumping capacity, delaying full water restoration. The recovery process is gradual, with water pressure returning first to low-lying areas before reaching higher-altitude neighborhoods. This phased recovery means that some residents may wait longer for normal water flow to resume.
Preparing for Ongoing Water Disruptions
Joburg residents should prepare for continued water supply challenges throughout the maintenance period. It is recommended to store sufficient water for daily needs and to use water sparingly. Joburg Water and Rand Water have established hotlines and communication channels to provide updates and assistance:

Current state
The current water outages in Johannesburg are part of a necessary maintenance effort to upgrade and secure the city’s water infrastructure for the future. While the short-term disruptions are inconvenient, they are essential for improving the reliability and capacity of water supply systems. Joburg Water urges residents to stay informed and plan accordingly by storing water and using tanker services during this period.
