The 73-year-old mentor intends to retire after leading the national team through their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. This is conditional upon qualification for the global spectacle set to take place in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

No New Adventures After Bafana Bafana

Hugo Broos made his intentions clear during a media briefing. He stated that once his contract with the national team ends, he will step away from the daily grind of coaching for good. With a career in football that began as a player at 19 and transitioned into management, Broos reflected on the toll and fulfilment of his decades in the game.

“The decision has been made,” he stated. “After the World Cup, I’ll be done. My contract ends, and that will be it for me as a coach.”

Having spent nearly 40 years on the sidelines, Broos explained that the time has come for him to focus on life beyond football. “I will not die on the bench,” he added. “It’s been a beautiful journey. Next year, I look forward to simply being at home with my wife, enjoying a cup of coffee.”

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1852772760112594"
data-ad-slot="1819787043"
data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

A Future Role in Football Still Possible?

Despite stepping away from coaching duties, Broos hasn’t completely closed the door on being involved in football. He hinted that while he’s done with the day-to-day demands of managing a team, he may still be open to occasional advisory roles. This could potentially be within the country’s footballing structure.

“You never know,” he mused. “Maybe I can still be of help in an advisory capacity. But one thing is certain – I don’t want to work every single day anymore.”

Bafana Bafana’s Road to 2026

Under Broos’ guidance, the national team is in a strong position to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With four matches left in the CAF qualifiers, Bafana sit atop Group C, five points ahead of both Rwanda and Benin. However, their lead is under threat due to a potential sanction from FIFA.

The world football governing body is currently reviewing an incident where midfielder Teboho Mokoena played against Lesotho while under suspension. Should FIFA decide to dock three points from Bafana, their qualification hopes could be significantly impacted. A final decision from the governing body is still pending.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1852772760112594"
data-ad-slot="1819787043"
data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

New Faces to Shine in Friendlies

Bafana are currently based in Polokwane as they prepare for a friendly encounter against Tanzania at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. The 23-man squad assembled for this camp notably excludes all Mamelodi Sundowns players. These players are gearing up for their FIFA Club World Cup commitments later this month.

In the absence of regular skipper Ronwen Williams, who also plays for Sundowns, Broos has handed the captain’s armband to Orlando Pirates defender Nkosinathi Sibisi for the upcoming fixtures.

The coach has reiterated his commitment to offering all players in camp a fair shot at proving themselves. Some of Bafana’s emerging talents are expected to earn their first senior caps either against Tanzania. Others might get a chance in Tuesday’s match against Mozambique, also to be played in Polokwane.

This broader squad evaluation comes at a crucial time, as Broos looks to identify depth and build resilience in the team. This process is vital ahead of the World Cup qualifiers resuming in September.

Broos’ Legacy Taking Shape

As the sun begins to set on Broos’ illustrious coaching career, the Belgian tactician is determined to leave the national team in a strong position. With qualification for the World Cup in sight and a new generation of players being blooded into the system, the final chapter of Broos’ story promises to be just as impactful as the rest.

Also read: Hugo Broos Defends Decision to Exclude Kaizer Chiefs Players from Bafana Squad

Veteran coach Hugo Broos has officially confirmed that his coaching journey will conclude with Bafana Bafana.
