National Treasury announced the increase in the 2026 Budget, which set the same average maximum, R2 400, for the Older Persons Grant and the Care Dependency Grant. R2 400 is the maximum; the amount you receive depends on the means test.

For this month’s payment dates, see our SASSA payment dates guide.

Who qualifies?

According to SASSA, you must:

be a South African citizen, permanent resident or recognised refugee living in South Africa;

be between 18 and 59 years old;

have a medical or functional assessment that confirms your disability, and provide clinical information or a referral form;

not be cared for in a state-funded institution;

not already receive another social grant for yourself;

pass the means test, which looks at the income and assets of you and, if married, your spouse.

SASSA says your medical assessment report must not be older than three months when you apply. If you were turned down before on medical grounds, you can submit a referral form completed by the facility or practitioner treating you.

The means test

Unlike the Child Support Grant, the Disability Grant checks both income and assets. SASSA adjusts the limits each year.

In an explainer reported in May 2026, SASSA said the Disability Grant uses the same limits as the Older Persons Grant: a monthly income limit of R9 350 for a single person and R18 700 for a married couple, and assets of no more than R1 584 000 for a single person and R3 168 000 for a married couple. There is no simple published formula for these limits, so confirm the ones that apply to you with SASSA before you apply.

Advertisement
<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1852772760112594"
data-ad-slot="1819787043"
data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

Documents you need

A certified copy of your valid 13-digit barcoded ID (and your spouse’s, if married), or a valid Section 24 refugee permit.
