Ending The Year On A High

In October 2023, inland 95 petrol rose by R1,14 to R25,68 a litre, one of the highest prices on record at the time. Two things drove it: higher international petrol prices and a weak rand, which averaged nearly R19 to the US dollar. Motorists got some relief before the holidays, with cuts of R1,78 in November and R0,65 in December.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1852772760112594"
data-ad-slot="1819787043"
data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

2024: Up In The First Half, Down In The Second

Petrol prices rose for four months in a row in early 2024, peaking at R25,49 in May. The second half of the year brought steady relief. Lower international oil prices and a stronger rand pushed petrol down to R21,05 by October 2024. The rand’s gains were linked to positive market sentiment after the May elections and the formation of the Government of National Unity. The year ended at R21,47, about R1 lower than it started.

2025: The Year Of Stability

For motorists, 2025 was the calmest year in recent memory. Inland 95 petrol stayed between R21,12 and R22,41 all year, and the largest monthly move was an increase of R0,82 in February. The average price for the year was R21,66, the lowest annual average of the three years.

2026: From A Three-Year Low To Record Highs

A Cheap Start

The year started well. Petrol fell to R20,75 in January and R20,10 in February 2026, the lowest price in the three-year period.

The Middle East Shock

Everything changed in March 2026, when conflict involving the US and Iran disrupted oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude rose from about $69 to nearly $94 a barrel on average, and later peaked at around $138.

To soften the blow, National Treasury cut the General Fuel Levy by R3 a litre from 1 April 2026. Petrol still rose by R3,06 to R23,36 in April. Without the relief, the increase would have been more than R6.

Record After Record

Petrol jumped another R3,27 in May, to R26,63. In June it rose R1,43 to a then-record R28,06, beating the previous record of R26,74 set in July 2022. Part of the June increase came from Treasury restoring half the levy relief and from a higher slate levy, which recovers a shortfall in the fuel price system. The levy relief was phased out completely from 1 July. Treasury estimated it cost about R17,2 billion in lost revenue.

A Brief Break

A US-Iran ceasefire reopened the Strait of Hormuz, and oil fell to about $75 a barrel by the end of June. Petrol dropped R1,96 in July and a further R0,52 in August, to R25,58.

October’s New Record

Middle East tensions flared again, and oil traded above $100 a barrel for much of September. Petrol rose R1,34 in September. In October it jumped R3,33, the biggest monthly increase in the three-year period, to a new record of R30,25 a litre. A higher slate levy also added to the October increase.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1852772760112594"
data-ad-slot="1819787043"
data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

And Diesel?

Diesel has followed a similar but even sharper path. The inland wholesale price of 0,05% diesel was:

Month

Diesel 0,05% (wholesale, inland)

Oct 2023

R25,02

Oct 2024

R18,45

Oct 2025

R19,34

Oct 2026

R31,95

That’s an increase of about 65% in a year. Diesel matters even if you drive a petrol car, because it powers the trucks, taxis, buses and farm equipment that move goods and people around Gauteng. Higher diesel prices end up in food prices and fares.

What Makes Up The Petrol Price?

South Africa’s petrol price is regulated and adjusted on the first Wednesday of every month. It’s made up of several parts:

The basic fuel price, which follows international petrol prices and the rand to US dollar exchange rate. This is the part that moves the most, and it caused most of the 2026 spikes.

The General Fuel Levy: R4,10 a litre for petrol from April 2026.

The Road Accident Fund levy: R2,25 a litre.

The slate levy, which recovers shortfalls in the fuel pricing system. It rose sharply in 2026.

Wholesale and retail margins, plus transport costs.

Why Gauteng pays more: fuel has to be transported inland from the coast, so inland prices are higher. In October 2026, inland 95 cost R30,25 a litre, compared with R29,38 at the coast.

What It Costs To Fill Up

Month

40-litre tank (95 inland)

50-litre tank (95 inland)

Oct 2023

R1 027,20

R1 284,00

Oct 2024

R842,00

R1 052,50

Oct 2025

R865,20

R1 081,50

Feb 2026 (low)

R804,00

R1 005,00

Oct 2026 (record)

R1 210,00

R1 512,50

A motorist who uses about 200 litres of 95 petrol a month now pays about R6 050, compared with R4 326 in October 2025. It projects inland 95 at about R32,53 a litre, which would add about R2,28. At that price, a 50-litre tank would cost about R1 627. These projections can change before the official announcement, which is expected a few days before the adjustment on 4 November.

Relief may be on the way. Parliament’s Standing Committee on Appropriations has adopted its report on a bill that would set aside R10 billion to stabilise fuel costs. The bill still has to pass the National Assembly, and the size of any per-litre relief hasn’t been announced. Rising prices have also sparked protests, with the Concerned Citizens of South Africa threatening a three-day national shutdown if fuel prices aren’t cut.

What This Means For Gauteng Residents

Gauteng residents drive long distances to work, pay inland prices and rely heavily on taxis and trucks, so they feel petrol increases more than most. Here are some ways to soften the impact:

Drive smoothly. Gentle acceleration and braking, and keeping to the speed limit, can noticeably reduce how much fuel you use.

Check your tyre pressure monthly. Under-inflated tyres increase fuel consumption.

Lighten the load. Remove roof racks and heavy items you don’t need.

Combine trips and avoid peak traffic where you can.

Check your manual before choosing 93 or 95. If your manufacturer approves 93, it’s usually cheaper. Don’t use a lower octane than your car needs.

Use fuel rewards. Bank and retailer rewards programmes can give back a few rand per litre.

Consider public transport for some trips. Gautrain fares are frozen for 2026, and a Metrorail trip from Mabopane to Pretoria costs R7.

Fill up before an increase. The Central Energy Fund’s mid-month data is a good early warning of whether prices are likely to rise.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1852772760112594"
data-ad-slot="1819787043"
data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is The Petrol Price In Gauteng Now?

From 7 October 2026, inland 95 petrol costs R30,25 a litre and 93 costs R29,88 a litre.

What Is The Highest Petrol Price In South African History?

The current record is R30,25 a litre for inland 95 petrol, set in October 2026. That beat June 2026’s R28,06, which had broken the July 2022 record of R26,74.

When Was Petrol Cheapest In The Last Three Years?

Petrol was cheapest in February 2026, when inland 95 cost R20,10 a litre.

Why Did Petrol Prices Rise So Much In 2026?

The main cause was conflict involving the US and Iran, which disrupted oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz and pushed oil above $100 a barrel. Restoring the fuel levy after the temporary relief, and a higher slate levy, added to the increases.

Will Petrol Go Up In November 2026?

Early Central Energy Fund data points to an increase of about R2,28, which would take inland 95 to around R32,53 a litre. The official price will be announced shortly before 4 November.

How Often Does The Petrol Price Change?

Fuel prices in South Africa are adjusted every month, usually on the first Wednesday.

Sources

Fuels Industry Association of South Africa: Fuel Prices, Current And Past

BusinessTech: Here Is The Official Petrol Price For October (2023)

Cape Argus: How South Africa’s Fuel Prices Fluctuated In 2024

Bloomberg: South Africa Cuts Fuel Taxes As Prices Spike On Iran War

TopAuto: Official Petrol Price Increases For April Announced

TopAuto: Bad News About Petrol Taxes In South Africa (Budget 2026)

Cape Times: South Africa Extends Fuel Levy Relief

BusinessTech: South Africans Set To Pay The Highest Petrol Price In History

BusinessTech: Here Is The Official Petrol Price For July (2026)

BusinessTech: R344 Petrol Price Pain For South Africa

TimesLIVE: Record Fuel Price Hikes, What You’ll Pay From October 7

BusinessTech: Here Is The Expected Petrol Price For November

Parliament: Standing Committee On Appropriations Adopts Report On R10 Billion Fuel Price Relief

What’s On G: Fuel Price October 2026

Three years ago, Gauteng motorists were paying R25,68 for a litre of 95 petrol.
