As part of a digital partnership with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA), the bank aims to help South Africans apply for their smart ID cards — and eventually passports — directly through their local Capitec branches.

While the rollout has faced slight delays, Capitec has confirmed that testing and pilot phases will begin later in 2025, with a wider rollout to follow in 2026. This development could be a game changer for millions of South Africans who live far from Home Affairs offices.

Expanding Access to Smart ID Cards

The smart ID card, introduced in 2013, replaced the old green barcoded ID book as South Africa’s official identification document. The move aimed to improve security, reduce fraud, and modernise the country’s identity system.

However, access to smart ID services has remained limited. Many citizens — particularly those in rural areas — still struggle to reach Home Affairs offices equipped with Live Capture Systems (the technology required to process smart IDs).

To fix this, the Department of Home Affairs partnered with several banks to bring ID and passport services closer to the people. Capitec’s entry into this programme marks a significant expansion of the initiative.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1852772760112594"
data-ad-slot="1819787043"
data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

Capitec’s Entry into the Smart ID Programme

Capitec is one of nine banks participating in the Department of Home Affairs’ digital partnership to expand ID and passport services.
