This comes after returning an adverse analytical finding during a random anti-doping test. The test was conducted by the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS). The tighthead tested positive for what SA Rugby confirmed to be a non-performance-enhancing substance.

The ruling comes as a major setback for the 24-year-old, who has enjoyed a breakthrough year with the national team. Having made his Test debut in the 45-0 victory against Italy in July, Ntlabakanye quickly earned another cap against Australia in the Rugby Championship. However, he will now miss the chance to line up against the All Blacks in back-to-back clashes in Auckland and Wellington.

Ntlabakanye Insists on His Innocence

In a statement released by SA Rugby on Sunday, Ntlabakanye firmly denied any wrongdoing. The prop maintains that he has not committed an anti-doping violation. He intends to defend his case through the official SAIDS process.

“The non-performance-enhancing substance for which he tested positive was prescribed by a specialist physician early in 2025 for medical reasons,” read the statement. “It was taken with the approval and supervision of a medical doctor specifically appointed to manage the medical affairs of professional rugby players.”

The release further emphasised that Ntlabakanye had been transparent in declaring his medication. He acted in good faith and followed the correct medical protocols. “At no time did he seek to obtain an unfair advantage, nor did he take any substance without prior medical authorisation,” SA Rugby stressed.

Springboks prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye WILL NOT be included in the travelling squad to New Zealand, SA Rugby confirm. pic.twitter.com/3zX7xrfpC4
— Jared Wright (@jaredwright17) August 24, 2025

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1852772760112594"
data-ad-slot="1819787043"
data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

Blow for Springbok Front Row Options

Ntlabakanye’s absence leaves the Springboks stretched in the No. 3 jersey. With experienced tighthead Frans Malherbe sidelined through a long-term injury, coach Rassie Erasmus will now look to the likes of Wilco Louw, Vincent Koch, Neethling Fouché, and Thomas du Toit. These players will cover the position against New Zealand.

The All Blacks fixtures are viewed as a defining stretch in the Rugby Championship. The Boks are still in contention for the title. Losing two key tightheads in such quick succession has forced Erasmus to rework his front row depth chart. This comes ahead of the highly anticipated tour.

A Career on Hold

For Ntlabakanye, the timing of the setback could not be worse. The front-rower has been one of the country’s brightest young prospects. He earned plaudits for his powerful scrummaging and mobility around the park. His rapid rise from Lions regular to Springbok starter was seen as a long-term solution. It addressed the team’s evolving pack dynamics.

Instead, he will now shift focus to clearing his name. SA Rugby confirmed that he will not be considered for selection until the matter is resolved. This will allow him to concentrate on defending his case. Neither the player nor his coaches will provide further comment while the SAIDS process is ongoing.

Two tough Tests against the @wallabies, the focus now shifts to the All Blacks in New Zealand. Many have pointed out the difference between a deliberate attempt to enhance performance and a prescribed medical treatment taken under professional supervision.

Nonetheless, the situation leaves uncertainty hanging over his international future. While a favourable outcome could see him reinstated swiftly, the SAIDS procedure must run its course.

Bok Front Row Faces Stern Test

As the world champions prepare for their New Zealand tour, the focus will inevitably turn to how Erasmus manages his depleted tighthead resources. Facing the All Blacks’ formidable scrum without Malherbe and Ntlabakanye will demand both tactical adjustments and resilience from the remaining props.

For now, though, one of South African rugby’s most promising new talents finds himself fighting to clear his name. He is sidelined from the game he has worked so hard to break into at the highest level.

Related article: Proteas Star Kagiso Rabada Tests Positive for Cocaine, Confirms SAIDS

Springbok prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye has been ruled out of the upcoming tour to New Zealand.
