During this 50-hour period, pumping will be completely halted to enable safe and effective pipe leak repairs at the Zuikerbosch plant. This temporary shutdown is necessary to prevent further damage and to improve the overall efficiency and capacity of the water supply system.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1852772760112594"
data-ad-slot="1819787043"
data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

Areas Most Affected by the Disruption

The water supply interruption will impact several Johannesburg Water (JW) systems connected to the Zwartkopjes and Eikenhof systems. After this, pumping capacity will be restored to 50% for the next 42 hours, before increasing to 80% capacity for the remaining 19 days of the broader maintenance programme. Although the 50-hour no-pumping phase is the most acute, water pressure will remain below normal levels for several weeks after.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1852772760112594"
data-ad-slot="1819787043"
data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

Broader Maintenance Programme Context

This 50-hour disruption is part of a larger 21-day maintenance schedule running from 30 June to 21 July 2025. The programme involves cleaning sedimentation tanks, repairing leaks, replacing valves, and upgrading infrastructure across multiple water systems serving Johannesburg and surrounding municipalities. These upgrades are critical to support the anticipated increase in water demand from August 2025 and to reduce the frequency of unplanned outages.

What Residents Should Do

Johannesburg Water advises residents to prepare by storing sufficient water before the outage begins. Alternative water supply points will be set up strategically within affected communities to help alleviate the impact. Residents should also expect a recovery period of up to 14 days after maintenance completion before normal water supply resumes fully.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1852772760112594"
data-ad-slot="1819787043"
data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

The Bigger Picture: Johannesburg’s Water Challenges

Johannesburg’s water infrastructure faces ongoing challenges, including ageing pipelines, leaks, and increasing demand.
