The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has been allocated a capital budget of R912.81 million<\/strong> for the 2025\/26 financial year. This budget forms part of a broader R2.8 billion<\/strong> commitment over the next three years. It aims to address the city\u2019s ageing and deteriorating road infrastructure. Although significant, it represents just over 1% of the estimated R276 billion<\/strong> backlog needed to fully restore and expand Johannesburg\u2019s road network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overview of the Budget Allocation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite the significant funding, the JRA\u2019s budget falls far short of the total investment required to fix Johannesburg\u2019s roads, bridges, and stormwater systems. Transport MEC Kenny Kunene highlighted the scale of the challenge, noting that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • R90 billion<\/strong> is needed to expand and upgrade the road network<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • R37 billion<\/strong> is required for bridge rehabilitation<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • R144 billion<\/strong> is necessary for stormwater infrastructure improvements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    The JRA will strategically deploy the R912 million allocated for the 2025\/26 year across critical programmes. This aims to maintain and improve the city\u2019s transport infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
