The exhibition by the Slovak artist, Alexander Godány, will be hosted by the Pretoria Art Museum and the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Pretoria from 12 May to 18 June 2023. The exhibition is the first of a series of cultural events which the Embassy of Slovakia would like to realise in South Africa in years to come with the aim of deepening friendly relations between the two countries and nations.
Godány was born in 1953 in Blatná na Ostrove, Slovakia. His talent became evident at an early age, without any help or support to improve or expand it. He decided to shape and build his entire career on his own. Godány attended several courses and centres of painting for amateur artists, studied the available literature and knowledge of artistic techniques, visited various museums and became an admirer of contemporary Italian and Spanish painters.
Through this exposure he collected an immense wealth of artistic information which he used to analyse and shape his own work.
As an artist he had his period of realism, expressionism, impressionism and surrealism, and until today he is still creating new art. His work is highly sentimental – a poetry of colours. What is most important is that he is always trying to establish contact with the public, and whoever is observing his paintings feels connected at some level.
