The 5th Makhelwane Festival will take place at Poka Street, Orlando West in Soweto from 13th to 15th December 2019.
The festival derives its name from the Zulu term ‘o makhelwane,’ referring to one’s neighbour, taking on a deeper meaning in African culture and referring to a community. Fittingly, what’s unique about the festival is that the community members open their homes to host the event, transforming their abodes into restaurants and galleries, both inside and out.
Several well-established local businesses and services will be highly visible at the festival, spurring the event on. The LoCrate Market, Soweto’s lifestyle market, has been behind the festival since its inception. It will be setting up fashion, art and food traders for the festival.
Poetry & Art
New to the festival this year is the Activist house, which is aimed at addressing social issues through mediums such as poetry, art, talks, film and many more.
A diverse mix of live local musical performances and your favourite DJs
The most delectable local food vendors will be filling up your tummies for the festival, including a pop up restaurant by Native Rebels. Comedy A little laughter 2019 has been a roller coaster of a year, we were never ready!
