Keen on an exciting wildlife-viewing day trip without having to spend many hours on the road? Or perhaps you’re in Jozi for business and looking to make the most of what Gauteng has to offer?
We’ve rounded up a few places where you can explore Gauteng's beauty while you watch wild animals in their natural habitat and still make it home for dinner.
Karma Game Ranch
If you’re looking for a relaxing day trip with some fun activities thrown in, Karma Game Ranch will have you covered. Just 15 minutes from Vereeniging and an hour’s drive from OR Tambo International Airport, the ranch offers morning, afternoon and night-time game drives, with the option of snacks and cocktails in the bush, or even a treasure hunt, as part of the deal. You can also opt for river rafting, quad biking, four-by-four trails, a sundowner paddle and other activities.
If you're staying overnight or attending a function or conference at the ranch, you will be welcomed at the lodge restaurant, but there are also braai facilities.
Dinokeng Game Reserve
This is the first free-roaming Big Five (lion, buffalo, elephant, leopard and rhino) residential game reserve in the province. In addition to viewing these and other animals on game drives, visitors can go on bush walks or cultural tours, enjoy some fishing or indulge in a spa-pampering session.
Ezemvelo Nature Reserve
The Ezemvelo Nature Reserve straddles the border between Mpumalanga and Gauteng. It’s a 45-minute drive from Pretoria and an hour from OR Tambo International Airport. The reserve is a mix of grassland, woodland and wetland and has fascinating rock formations.
Visitors can enjoy guided bird walks, game drives (day and night), mountain biking and hiking trails, as well as horseback safaris. The reserve also has picnic and braai facilities.
