On 14 August we checked in to the magnificent Maslow Hotel at Time Square in Pretoria, for the media launch of the 2019 Lilizela Awards – the only national award event celebrating tourism excellence countrywide.
Guests were welcomed by SA Tourism's acting CEO, Sthembiso Dlamini, who further discussed tourism offerings and the importance of this award.
Darryl Erasmus from the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) shared more info with the media regarding TGCSA’s role in elevating hidden gems to give them market access, new criteria released April of this year, including new categories, an accolade for responsible and sustainable tourism and the new 5-star premium Grading Standard. Only 6 properties have received this particular accolade, including the Time Square Arena, which sets a grand stage for the 2019 Lilizela Tourism Awards.
It was an informative and fun event with a panel discussion lead by Altaaf Kazi, GM: Global PR, Communications and Stakeholder Relations at SA Tourism, a live tourism grading demonstration by celebrity comedian and chef Lebogang Tlokana, and a delicious lunch courtesy of The Maslow Hotel.
The awards will consist of a provincial round during September, saving the best for last – Gauteng. The final awards will be held at a prestigious ceremony hosted at Time Square's Sun Arena, on 9 November 2019.
