The hub of Dinokeng Game Reserve
The Dinokeng Game Reserve is the first free-roaming Big 5 game reserve in Gauteng – and probably in the world – adjacent to an urban area. It is a private/public initiative for which planning and development started in the early 2000s. The reserve was officially opened on 22 September 2011 following the introduction of four of the Big 5. The last of the Big 5, the Cape buffalo, was introduced in late 2012. The Dinokeng Game Reserve self-drive route was launched on 16 December 2014. There are currently a number of self-drive routes in the reserve suited to both sedan and high-clearance vehicles.
