Cullinan is perhaps best known for diamonds, but the small town, which is about 30km east of Pretoria, has some tourism gems that are well worth exploring, particularly for those who love a good hike.
The same volcanic activity millennia ago that caused the formation of Cullinan’s famous diamond-rich kimberlite pipe was also responsible for the deep gorges and green valleys that make Cullinan a perfect hiking destination.
In fact, the so-called "lava tunnels" and mountainous terrain have become a favourite for adventure seekers.
Did that get you intrigued enough to pull on your hiking boots? Good. Now, where should you go?
Windy Brow, a game farm just 5km out of Cullinan, offers three different trails that you’re bound to enjoy.
Windy Brow offers three hiking routes:
- The Archaeological route (3.5km): a route around an archaeological site, particularly abundant in birdlife.
- The Geological route (3.2km): this route, Jacana says, "goes along and over the Quartzite koppie overlooking the Premier Diamond Mine (now known as Petra Diamond Mine) and the big hole"
- The Ecology route (5.9km): if you're interested in animals, this is the route for you. Jacana says you can spot giraffe, zebra, gemsbok and waterbuck on this trail.

The Somabula Game Reserve is an 8km drive from Cullinan. The reserve offers a range of activities, including hiking. It also boasts giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and a variety of antelope. The trail is apparently unmarked, according to blogger Busisiwe Radebe, though she did note that you can pick up a map in the reception area.
So, the next time you're in the mood to make the most of the great outdoors we have in Gauteng, think about taking a drive out to Cullinan.
